I woke up early last Saturday morning eager to get the day started. Though it would be a long day, the idea of meeting excited kids at the Bed-Stuy Y, and later enjoying an R&B concert, were enough to put a little spring in my step. Armed with fruit smoothie ingredients and chocolate treats, I headed to the Healthy Kids day at the Bed Stuy Y. Kids Eating for Life! was the theme for the healthy snack making demonstration I conducted for the YMCA summer campers. You would have had a ball, just as I did, had you seen all the excited kids as they came running up to the table wanting to learn how to make strawberry-banana smoothies and graham cracker crisps with bananas, shaved coconut and chocolate chips. It was great to see families out together, and staff members teaching fencing and jumprope techniques to the kids, while Justin Timberlake’s new album played in the background.

Seeing everyone out enjoying themselves reminded me of my YMCA and cookout days back in my hometown of Washington, DC. It really warmed my heart to be out at this great event, sharing with the kids and seeing them enjoy healthy foods that hopefully they will remember for a life time.
