Scuba diving trip on the Great Escape, Day 2 at Catalina Island, Channel Islands, California

We did a deep dive on Little Farnsworth where divers were greeted by huge schools of blacksmiths and perch, a giant black sea bass, dozens of other colorful fish like garibaldi, sheepheads, kelp bass, island kelpfish, painted greenling, and nudibranchs. Water was in the upper 50s below the thermocline, and vis was only 20-40'.

Camcorder: Canon HG-21, HD

When I was a kid there were no Black Sea Bass at Catalina. What a great gift for local divers to be able to experience seeing such magnificent huge animals the way skin divers could 50-60 years ago.

    Enjoyed the video.

yeah, the GBSB are definitely making a big comeback. I wish I had some good footage of them, but I always seem to be looking the wrong direction so I get nothing but buttshots or the camcorder is turned off.
On this dive the bass swam right up behind me while I was shooting the nudie, and watched over my shoulder. I never saw him but several other divers on the boat did, and wouldn't let me forget it the rest of the day!

I know lots of large marine animals prefer to see but not be seen. I have had plenty of large seals sneak up behind me, then when I turned around and made eye contact, off they went, only to see those sneaky little devils at the edge of visibility make a huge circle and try to sneak back up on me again.

I tend to do only tropical now, but I too would enjoy getting some good head-on HD BSB footage.

Nice video. I know how you feel about not being lucky getting the Black Sea Bass shots. I have the same luck.. thats also why I stay away from the blackjack tables in Vegas too. :) Hey.. I saw some San Clemente Island topside shots sneaked in there. :)
