THIS IS TEST FOOTAGE - I got home and started cutting together the footage to get a quick idea of how it looked, and I couldn't stop. :)

We're working on a short 3 minute mountain biking piece, and needed to test some locations and shots. John (the rider) was kind enough to come along and be our model for a day, show us the trail, and kick up some dust. Most shots are taken from a car, at 100-200mm, on a road bumpier than a thirteen year old kids forehead.

Shot with the D300s with the Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 and 17-35mm f/2.8.

This is the temp edit, but much of these shots will be filled in with the final footage we shoot in coming weeks.

Nice work. The Nikon video seems to lend itself to a grunge treatment. Any complaints / tips re the D300s?
  • Ron Adair plus 2 years ago
Thanks, Trevor. Gritty is my most common "artificial flavoring" when editing. I'm sure I'll try some cleaner stuff sometime....

I love the D300s. The video quality is quite good, and I actually really like the better implementation of the codec and capture from the chip. At first I didn't see a lot differences on the surface between the D300s and the D90. But as I've used it, I've seen quite a few of these little things that make working with it much simpler.

Of course there are limitations, but there will always be limitations. There are limitations when shooting film, when shooting the RED, 5D etc.

My feeling is that you can either work around the limitations, or you can waste your time complaining about them. I prefer to go out and learn with what I have available at the time.

    Have fun shooting!

    Thanks, BKD.

Congrats on the D300s. Sounds like you're gonna love it. Hit me back when you get some footage rolled out.

Hey, just jumped over to your profile page...Are you Chris? What role did you have in the CO-EX showreel? How were you involved in those productions?
  •
  • Chris Allen 2 years ago
Yip thats me! All the stuff in the CO-EX showreel is created by me... although it spans over a 4 year period. In the last year I've only shot a few interviews and some live performance footage with a JVC GY HD101E... which I recently sold to get the Nikon D300s :)

The Raleigh content in the reel, was one of my very first productions shot in SD on a Canon XL1s... it was for Raleigh South Africa.

I'm actually planing on shooting some more MTB content for a new client twowheelstrading.co.za as I will be upgrading their website shortly.

Drop me an email if you want to know more!

Kudos, man. That's some nice stuff for sure. I have little doubt you're gonna love using the D300s. You seem very qualified to use it correctly - that reel isn't the reel of a whiner. I'm really interested to see what you produce with it!

I added you as a contact - I'm sure we'll be keeping in touch...

Thank so much for the encouragement, makes all the hours sat behind the screen totally worth it :)

I am off on a cultural tour of Turkey for 5 days from the 22 Sep, so I'm really hoping my D300s arrives in time for that as I would love to test it out at some of the spots we are visiting!

I will post some shots if I do :)

    Looking forward to it!

  • Ron Adair plus 2 years ago
    Thanks, Wesley -

We were going to be shooting addt'l footage this last week, but had to cancel due to inclement weather. Fall is coming fast here. Snowed here this week. And Al Gore is worried about global warming. If only...Hopefully we can get this done before winter comes.

I too have decided on the D300s. I'm sticking with Nikon after 18 years. The 7D seems a little brash to me. Too shiny somehow. I'll partner it with my beloved, tough and reliable D200 system.

    I can't wait.

I'm currently researching a documentary on parkour and I'll be shooting it with my D200 and 300s, stills and motion capture. Getting well excited. Should have it by year's end.
