very very very nice. an ad for jeans?

i have to ask, how did you achive that shot 0:22 - where the camera moves in sync with the actress?
  • Charles Lowthian plus 3 months ago
    great footage.
looks like that shot was done with a bodycam type rig - camera attached to the subject.
  • Camille Marotte plus 3 months ago
Well the shot was just slightly stabilized in post, with the focus point on her.

Beautiful toning, great style. Do u use FxPlugins like Magic Bullet in AE? Can u be more specific about your grading process? I'm busy with some series. Export the whole thing like a image sequence and tone the frames with Adobe Lightroom. Easy to work with but the final export quality is horrible. I'm searching for a good solution...

    Cheers!
  • Camille Marotte plus 3 months ago
    Well Yossip, that's a strange workflow :)
In this particular video it's pretty simple.
There is a couple of adjustment layers with curves and hue/saturation effects and another layer with a Magic Bullet looks effect with a low opacity.

Basically, I just boosted up the contrast and desaturate a bit and that's all.
  • Alexander 3 months ago
    Are you editing with Premiere?
  • Camille Marotte plus 3 months ago
No everything is done in After effects.

Very nice. Did you do all of the Depth of field effects with just the camera or did you create any dof w/AE ?
  • Camille Marotte plus 3 months ago
    Just with the camera.

    Wow , great work.

Damn... just a hint of jello-cam in there. Thats unfortunate.
  • Camille Marotte plus 3 months ago
Yea you're right, and I try really hard to attenuate it with RollingShutter plugin from TheFoundry, but it's still here.
  • Bryan Woods 3 months ago
How are your experiences with their new plugin? I've heard about it and am trying to get some feedback on it so I can decide whether I want to get it or not for Nuke.
  • Camille Marotte plus 3 months ago
All I can say is that it's fast, automatic, and it instantly reduce the jellow effect but just the skew effect, not the vertical compression you have when moving vertically.

But it's good, try the demo.
  • I don´t care about the jello...it is GREAT...there are much more serious issues with film cameras...
  • Bryan Woods 2 months ago
lol, and what makes you say that?

Wow.. amazing.. the shot in 0:19 was taken with the Canon 100mm 2.8?
  • Camille Marotte plus 3 months ago
Not this one, in fact it's almost the 50 1.4 all the time cause its image looks really better.

The few shots I remember with the 100 was the ones with the shoes.
  •
  • Cameron Trejo plus 3 months ago
fantastic. when you rock those handheld shots are you using a redrock/zacuto style rig or are you just going handheld and calling it a day?
  • Camille Marotte plus 3 months ago
It's only handheld, but I tried to stabilize a bit one or two shots in post prod.

holly crap. That looks so amazing. Impressive, I like it Camille. Can you alaberate a little on your post process... How did you get rid of all the blowout skin detail in that bright sun in your grading process and what were your compression settings?
  • Camille Marotte plus 3 months ago
    Hi Jay,
Well it was sunny this day and I just overexposed some shots to keep her glasses bright enough. Her hair was really nice in the sun too.
Grading was really straitforward : contrast up, saturation down.
For compression I always use DivX HD with quantitizer quality to 1 (max).

Camille Marotte great job. I just loved the girl in it. And the vibrating guitar strings were so cool. So whats the verdict on the Canon 5D Mark II? Lastly the choice of music was dead on! Nice going!!
  • Camille Marotte plus 3 months ago
The Mark II for me is a dream come true.
Of course you have to take care not to move too much because of the jellow effect, and you can't do slow motion as much as you would like, but the DOF and IQ are just unbelievable at that price.

What CF Card do you use? I am debating the Sandisk III or IV for best outcome. Thanks mucho! Great work!
  • Camille Marotte plus 3 months ago
I'm using Lexar 300x (=Sandisk IV speed, but a bit cheaper).

    The more speed, the better.

Unbelievable work Camille, yet again! I love all of your videos. Looking forward to your next piece. Also, If you were to pick one lens for general video, what would it be? Do you think a 50mm works best for video?
  • Camille Marotte plus 2 months ago
    Hi Mark,

Yeah the 50mm is great for everyday use, and perfect for intimist portraits.
And I don't really like videos using lots of differents lens, or videos using zooming, it tends to be more a "demonstration".
  • Julien Taillez plus 2 months ago
    I totally agree.
  •
  • TortueGenial 2 months ago
Did you release the strings for the guitars close-ups?
  • Camille Marotte plus 2 months ago
Well some are saying it's due to the way the 5D captures video, some it's just because of the high speed used to film those strings.

  • TortueGenial 2 months ago
Thx, that's a very cool effect I wasn't aware of.... Not linked to the 5D itself but to the sampling rate (like the flickering when you film a TV screen). By the way you're doing an amazing job on your videos. Very well done.
  •
  • Soroush Shahrokni 2 months ago
You have done it again sir. Fantastic.

It looks as if the strings on the guitar have been downtuned to A or lower, very nice. =D

A very abrupt ending, was that on purpose or was this just a teaser?
  • Camille Marotte plus 2 months ago
Yeah the goal is to be teasing :)

    Hello Camille,
    awesome video again.
You use After Effects for Grading but editing with.... Final Cut? Sony Vegas? Premiere? ......
    Thanks

I just love it !! You make me to buy that camera lol.

If you don't mind my asking ....plz.
how did you get the forcus with moving a camera ?
'cause it is not automatic, isnt it ?
  • Camille Marotte plus 1 month ago
It's not automatic, you have to focus yourself with the focus ring and it's a little tricky when moving, but all the magic is in "happy accidents" isn't it? :)
  •
  • JERONIMO 1 month ago
    thanks for your comment.
    sure, you're right ! :D
Anyway now I am your big fan !! :)

Liked it, But when using an instrument in shots where music is driving the feel of the piece I feel it's important to really match up the feel of the music and the shot. So some of the guitar stuff didn't work for me. It looked like 1. Your actress/model didn't know how to play guitar 2. your guitar wasn't even usable (because of the string slack) 3. the emotion being showed when playing the guitar didn't sync up with the emotion of the song at the time.

overall I liked it though. Great work.
  • Camille Marotte plus 1 month ago
Good point Joshua, and yes the model was a really bad player, and it was a pain to make her play :)

Actually the guitar was usable, the effect on the cords is due to the way the 5D captures the image.

Amazing work, I love it. Would you please share your in camera settings (picture profile)?
  • Camille Marotte plus 1 month ago
    Hi,
My profile picture is just the default one, I didnt really dig in that direction but i seems you can get some good result with a in-camera diminution of contrast.

Camera settings were basically : ISO100, f/1.4 and shutter around 1000.

    Hope that helps :)
  • Joost Dhaese 1 month ago
    It sure does, thanks!

Kind of surprises me that this footage is shot default; your post workflow is probably just amazing ;).

is it the BLOCKBUSTER in magic bullet that u use?
its kinda... hope im right about it. you amazed me camille?
  • Camille Marotte plus 1 month ago
Well, sometime I'm using it but in a very light manner at about 20-25% opacity.

I didn't use it in the one, the grading was really simple in fact : contrast up/saturation down ;)
  •
  • Nicely done and I'm glad you are using After Effects.

I think this is the best video from you. The 2nd last shot where you shoot her ass could have been better though. It goes out of the focus 2 times.
  • Camille Marotte plus 19 days ago
Yeah I know, not easy to have a good focus in those conditions :)
  •

I just love your work. I've come from a photoshop background (taking photos as a hobby) so know how to do some cool grading and magic with layers and masks in photoshop, but video is still pretty new to me - Are there some online AE tutorials that you would recommend? I have AE4 that came with adobe photoshop CS4 but I have no idea where to start to transfer my skills over to AE4. Any direction would be very much appreciated.
  • Camille Marotte plus 19 days ago
    Hi Rudy,

Well one of the best place to find free tutorials for After Effects is VideoCopilot.net : videocopilot.net with a special page for beginners : videocopilot.net/basic

    Hope that helps ;)
