The next generation of piano players are already etching their way in stone with their vision of jazz music and beyond. Eldar, Gerald Clayton, Orrin Evans, and Christian Sands are well on their way to bringing the young and the old to clubs and festivals all over the world with a new way of presenting the roots and soul of this music.
What Christian brings is a swag that brings the past, present, and future that's well needed at a time when jazz music is oversaturated with hype players and musicians with no enthusiasm. Christian has and still is mastering the art of stride piano passed down from his mentor, the late Dr. Billy Taylor. In fact, his piano style and his new trio reminds many of the late educator and musician.
The New Haven, Ct native was classically trained starting at age three and was composing by the time he was 10. Christian enrolled in a summer music program at the University of Massaschusetts-Amhurst where Dr. Taylor was teaching and became his mentor up until his death a couple of years ago. Christian also took part of the Jazz Next Program founded by jazz vocalist Betty Carter that further showcased his piano talents to the music world.
Currently, Christian has recorded three CD's and playing with master bassist Christian McBride in both his trio and group Inside Straight. Look for his upcoming CD to be released soon.
