15. Canon 7D with 50mm f/1.2 in low light and shallow DOF
2 years ago
Here are some clips (no sound) that we shot in the San Juan Bautista State Park. Especially the Bar room is very dark. All clips were shot with the 7D and the Canon 50mm f/1.2 (mostly about ISO 600 -800).

Shot at 1080p and down sampled to 720p.

We like this combination for indoor scenes.

Note: The Pool scene is not slow motion. We cannot really play these balls in a museum :-).

The pool scene is almost comical though. It makes me laugh see the cue slowly approach the ball, it then slows, then gently pushes. It reminds me of Wes Anderson or something.

Also, is this 30p? What shutter are you shooting at?
  • No, 24p. I tried to stay at 1/60

Are any of these shots a shutter of 1/24? Because if all of these pans are 24p 1/60, then it looks like the images are running together much more so than a prosumer camera's 1/60. Do you find that shooting on a higher ISO decreases the faster shutter effect (e.g. needing to increase shutter speed to maintain a filmic stutter)
  • Cannot tell. I am not really an expert in telling what is filmic look or not. Essentially I am a photographer who works his way into video.

It looks excellent. I shoot at 1/50 with the GH1 which is as close to 1/48, which is the shutter speed used by film cameras shooting at 24fps. And the most recommended for video cameras also shooting at 24fps.

@John, yes, you're right, which makes me think he shot it at 30p, because you can't access 1/60 shutter speed without shooting 30 fps. 1/48 would be the next increment, and would skip over 1/60, to 1/100 shutter speed.
  • I shot 1080p 24fps

Haha, the pool scene is somehow funny indeed...
Did you stop down the lens or was it fully open during all shots?
    thx
  • >Did you stop down the lens or was it fully open during all shots?

Stopped slightly down. Old habit. 1.6-2.0 about.

    Sorry Uwe, another question...
I've seen you shot the same bar room with the GH1 as well, with the kit lens though. Comparing both cameras, what differences in low light handling did you experience?
    thx Uwe!
  • >what differences in low light handling did you experience?

This was way the best low light shots I got so far. The real comparison would be using top Leica or Zeiss lenses. Try to do this.

Also the auto WB was fine with the 7D.

    Thanks for the information Uwe.
Btw, it's always interesting for me to watch photographers enter the video area. There are stunning images in "Walking the Monterey Commercial Pier"!
  • I think we understand images. Now we have to learn motion and sound :-). But it is fun.

    Not planning for Holywood.

May I ask what picture profile you shot with?

The contrast here is really tasteful, there is a really nice level to the low-end tonal range...

Any hints/experiences you've had would be very helpful,
    thanks!
  • I always use:

    - Sharpening very low but not off
    - Contrast low
    - Saturation one step down

Quaite happy with my settings on the 7D. May need to tweek the GH1 settings though.

Very nice, thank you for posting those.

Would you recommend the 7D over the GH1 for video use only?
  • Very hard to tell. Looks like the 7D leads in low light while the GH1 handling is better.
