"Mantra" // 9" x 11.75" // Cyanotypes on colored paper, saddle stitched // 2013
Mantra is an artist book made with photographs of natural elements, like clouds and water, and computer generated gradients printed through cyanotype, an alternative darkroom process. These ambiguous representations of the natural world and abstract graphic visuals are repeated in variations throughout the work and assembled into a non-linear narrative of visual meditation. The work emphasizes physicality of its images by existing as cyanotypes on thick colored paper. Through its repetition and tactility, this work references prayer beads, a device used to count the number of times a mantra is recited whilst meditating. When a viewer engages with the work, the action of page-turning becomes a rhythmic performance, and within that time the work functions as a tool to help the viewer in their contemplation on nature and abstract forms.
