In this video Arianna Carini (Staffordshire Hoard Conservation student) shows the different types of microscopes used in conserving the Staffordshire Hoard. Arianna is currently in her 2nd year at Cardiff University working toward her MSc in Conservation Practice, she worked with the Staffordshire Hoard Conservation team at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery this summer.
The artefact she uses while describing each microscope is an example of a panel decorated with niello and silver gilding. Niello is made by filling and then heating channels in the silver with black metal sulphide. Silver gilding is a thin gold layer over silver metal.
