The chamber opera, The Mask in the Mirror, deals with the courtship and failed marriage between the famed African-American poet, Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906) and novelist Alice Ruth Moore (1875-1935). As was the custom at the end of the nineteenth century, they courted by letter. Theirs was at best, a troubled liaison, shadowed by inner conflict, racism, infidelity, verbal and physical cruelty. Despite their problems, Alice liked to think of the outward appearance of their relationship as a possible uplifting image to a Black America, still in search of an identity, in the early decades following emancipation.
Richard Thompson wrote the libretto and music.
This performance was recorded August 4, 2012 at the Central Theatre in Newark, NJ
