Delivering Malawi takes us inside a mission hospital in rural Malawi. In the midst of the health crisis across Sub-Saharan Africa, the staff of Embangweni Hospital in the impoverished north of Malawi cares for 120,000 people, all nearly free of charge, with just one doctor. Martha Sommers and her Malawian team face a vast array of challenges, including outdated and broken equipment, expired medication, performing surgery with power outages, and the “brain drain” of trained medical practitioners drawn to work for resource-rich NGOs in the cities and abroad. They also face personal struggles, as they, too, suffer from many of the same illnesses they treat. But this cadre of devoted professionals, equipped with equal faith in science and religion and a strong sense of community, works around the clock to bring healthy babies into the world, cure tuberculosis and malaria, take away the pain of AIDS, and bury the dead. Delivering Malawi presents a dynamic view of life, death, and medicine in Malawi and shows us how health care is a metaphor for the universal conflicts and complications of contemporary times: It is music, theater, and dance; perseverance, celebration, and commiseration; economic aid from around the world and human resources from their own community. While the hospital team improvises a balance between modern medicine and traditional healing, the church and traditional religion, and colonialism and traditional culture, it finds that the problem of tending people well under perpetually precarious conditions has no simple cure.
