    great stuff.

Damn, I am praying for a 5d firmware upgrade to include these frame rates or I'm gonna be crying... flip out screen would be nice too...
  • Kanim Allomin 3 months ago
    Hi,

7D the $1800 24P firmware upgrade for 5D. Why give free 24P for 5D and terminate 7D? Canon like money. Exception of 7D little sensor to 5D. Is OK you pay $4000 for 5D MARK III with full sensor and 24P. No flip out screen that will be 9D.
  • Oliver Wilkins plus 3 months ago
    Thanks Kanim,

I blame Mr Bloom, he's too good. Salesman or not...

Another fine film from Philip Bloom!

I recently emailed Canon and asked if there were any plans for firmware upgrades on the 5Dmk2 to add video functionality such as AGC override, frame rate control, headphone output, zebra stripes etc.. their reply was 'There are no plans for any future firmware upgrades on the 5D mark 2 and if I want more video controls to purchase a video camera."
I guess that answers that question. A tad bit on the rude side considering how big of a spotlight Canon put on the video functions on the 5D mark 2.(not to mention how much all of us spent on these cameras) I would not hold my breath waiting for upgrades to the 5Dmk2. So now we look to the fine folks that are developing the Magic Lantern software upgrades to help us turn the 5Dmk2 into a more functional video camera.
With that said.. I still LOVE my 5dmk2.. the video is AWESOME! and there are work arounds for audio.. it would just be nice for Canon to make it a better video camera.. and to be a little nicer to it's customers.
  • Kanim Allomin 3 months ago
Maybe great amounts of questions like that as 5D2 turn the planet upside down. 5D2 will not receive 24P firmware upgrade for 24P in 5D2 is hardware not firmware and Canon not to commence replace chips in 5D2 for people to have 24P. To us it is large because we all do not stop talking this me too but for 5D2 video market is in bottom of list for sales. We remember these to be still photo cameras a market that we see history and grow across many years. 5D2 out for 1 yr that the age of the 5D2 video market which is a baby, Greetings.
  • Oliver Wilkins plus 3 months ago
That is a kinda rude response from canon. Maybe they're starting to think that they're giving away a bit to much with 5d... They must have a fat video camera waiting in the wings... The 5d really seems to have brought the video/photo convergence thing together... A pity if they start holding functions back from products just to squeeze customers...
  • William Rich 3 months ago
I think you might have something there Oliver.. I too think the very positive response to the 5D2 video quality has them developing a video camera with the 5D technology.. time will tell.. I also agree they are withholding firmware upgrades on the 5D2 so when they unviel the 'full frame big megapixel video camera' people will want to buy it because their 5d's won't be able to do what the new one does.. that's what they did with the 7D.. I do remember taking a survey after buying my 5d2 and many of the questions were geared towards a flip out LCD..
  • Semiconductor 2 months ago
We'll that sums that up then in the PAL world. 7D here we go.
I would add that even if canon release a full frame HD camera it will be a lot more expensive and bulky than these cameras and lens compatibility will be a whole new issue. Essentially a new kind of camera and the costs to go with.

There has been footage posted from the 7D with significant moire in the 720p footage (but no such problem with the 1080p). Is this the case with your 7D Philip?
  • Philip Bloom plus 3 months ago
not notice it but haven't shot much 720 footage
  • Sumit Agarwal 3 months ago
In the shot at 0:08 I believe I see some aliasing on the lower rims of the eyeglasses.
  • Michael Booth plus 3 months ago
Cheers Philip. I think there is some moire on the glasses. What a shame, if it's definitely not in the 1080p footage then hopefully a firmware fix will solve it as Canon seem to have fixed all the 5D problems with this camera.
  • Gaiden Effects 3 months ago
Unfortunately there is some aliasing, but not just in this clip, I've noticed it in some other 7d clips. Hope it will be fixed!

By the way, de shots are great! Thank's for sharing!

is the slow motion created by 60p(50p?) slowed to 24p or 24p that was slowed down?
  • Shinji Ikari 3 months ago
On his site it says: 60p to 24p

24p slowed down wouldn't be that smooth :]
  • Philip Bloom plus 3 months ago
60p changed to 24p in cinema tools to get the perfect slow motion

ok was the Canon 5D Mark II on "monochrome" setting? Or were you using the 7D. It says 7d on title and 5d in liner notes. Please correct.. thanks
  • Shinji Ikari 3 months ago
On his site it says 7D. And there is actually no point in asking if you just know the secs of both and that 5D ain't capable of producing such smooth slow-mo.
  • Philip Bloom plus 3 months ago
i shot on the 7d in colour. grade it. if you read the notes it says we were at WEVA to do seminars on the 5dmkII. It does not say it was shot with that camera!
  • DaVincicode plus 3 months ago
I stand corrected... my mistake.. thank you.

AH poor Joe such a good sport! Loved meeting all these great folks at WEVA. Best of luck too all. Phil and Den you have a winning product keep up the good work! I still think is a good idea for all the 5DmkII oweners to let thier beards grow until Canon releases firmware but Kanim makes a point I wish I had figured out.

If the 7D had a full frame sensor, an intervalometer (for timelapse) and a GPS chip, it would be the perfect camera for me ! ;-)

  • Philip Bloom plus 3 months ago
why? are we about content or technology here?
  • Sumit Agarwal 3 months ago
Typically, yes, about content. But in the wake of a potentially earth-shattering new product? I think we can be excused for being a bit technology-centric ;)

Although by now anyone following Philip's work should know he loves the 35mm f/1.4L on APS-C bodies...

  • Great shots...I think there might have been a problem with the export to vimeo because the image has a lot of artifacts...not the faces but the whole background...probably low light? Did you take the color in post or filmed it in BW? I was comparing the slow motion and the BW with some work I have seen and the artifacts are not present that was why I wondered...

The slow motion doesn't look nearly as good as the HVX200. Why is that? Phil, is the process of converting 60fps to 24 difficult? Does it take awhile? I'm surprised that you just can't throw the footage on a 24p FCP timeline... :(
  • Michael Booth plus 3 months ago
From looking at some of Uwe Steinmueller's clips it seems that the 720p on the 7D isn't as good as the 1080p. Image processing doesn't seem to be doing its job, so perhaps a firmware update will fix it given that the 1080p looks great.

hi, i would recommend you to go for 7D and a tokina 11-16mm f2.8 lens + kit lens (for basic). I have done an extensive research and this would be a great combination along with the kit lens. If money permits u can go on adding lenses including the 85mm f1.2. You can ask me any doubt you have about 5D . I can help you.
  •
  • Kanim Allomin 2 months ago
I not cancel unless your quest 7D features capturing in exclusive operation. 5D2 world class imaging. 7D not. 5D2 best for wide lens. 7D not. 5D2 addition of light capturing addition to depth of field your manipulations. 7D new features in the presentational announcement of Canon web site. In the fundamental theories of relationship in comparison scale features at offer in contrast to image quality. Greetings.

Hi philip, its amazing. i mean i was waiting to see the slow motion results for canon 7d,and it was fantastic.

i hope canon launch full frame censor size camera with 24p and full HD movie mode.
  • David Spicer 23 days ago
A new firmware for the Canon 5D Mark II is coming sometime in the first half of 2010 allowing it to record at 24p.

I hope that they add 60fps at 720p to it as well. It would be nice if they could do that at 1080p but I don't know if the camera can handle that.
