Demonstrating on a SmallHD.com DP1 HDMI field monitor that the camera can remain in full 1080i HD while recording. This will be merged into the upcoming 0.1.7 release of the Magic Lantern firmware for the Canon 5D Mark II once the bugs that cause the flashing onscreen and in the file are worked out.

Dude you are kicking all kinda ass with the 5D2. Good job! Any plans to get manual controls on the T1i?
  • Trammell Hudson plus 3 months ago
If I had a 500D/T1i or 7D, I'd be hacking on them, too. It shouldn't be too hard to port many of these features to the current set of camera bodies.

If you would have 500d do you think it would be easier to find out frame rate switch in processor if it has 20p mode ?
Or maybe once 7D will be shipped you could dump is firmware and take a look whats happening if you change frame rate and allow this on 5d and 500d ?
How big is the risk to brick camera if you would have 500d sent to you ?

Still not FULL HD...as in 1080p. So yes, it still has a problem. Better, but still a problem for some of us that wants to use a nanoFlash as a better quality video recorder via Live View.

can we record from that without compression?
  • James Churchman 3 months ago
    this is really incredible!!

and yes i think thats the point, bypassing the internal h264 compression and allowing recording of the uncompressed hdmi out -- using either a box like a Aja Ki Pro ( aja.com/products/ki-pro/ ) or on a computer with a black magic intensity blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/ -- though im really waiting for usb 3.0 to arrive - then full 1080i/p recording could be added to any machine with a small hdmi adapter/converter (eg even a laptop) for recording / editing in the field of near losses compressed (eg with pro res or similar) can be done!!
  • In my case the point is improved ability to focus, by having a better more detailed monitor.

guys, stupid question... If i don't use magic lantern, and i connect external LCD monitor, during recording, do i record in full HD? I don't mind about the signal going to LCD, but about recording. Does canon change resolution IN the recorded material? Sorry... it's just not so clear to me
  • Jackson Miller 3 months ago
No. It records HD of course. Your on camera lcd won't work at the same time as the external one.
  • Power Tase 3 months ago
Thanks Jackson, one more... If i use other composite video out, may i use standard lcd display? It's difficoult to find HD monitors in Macedonia

    Hey Trammell,

Don't suppose you're thinking of buying a 7D anytime soon? I know thousands of people must be asking you this, but I'm sure that you put up a donations page offering to hack the 7D, then you'd have the funds in no time to buy one...
