Downhill Mountain Bike Film featuring Alex Couture shot at Attitash Mountain in Bartlett, New Hampshire (September 2009). Alex is a Giant Bicycles/Michelin Tires rider and he rips on a 2009 Giant Glory DH mountain bike.

Shot on a Sony PMW-EX1 with Letus Ultimate, Canon 5dmk2, and a Panasonic Lumix ZS3. I used all Nikon prime lenses.

I also used a Redrock Micro Matte Box, Vinten Vision 10 AS tripod (carbon fiber and baby legs), homemade 5dmk2 helmet mount, PVC pipe dolly and Zoom H4 audio recorder.

Edited on Final Cut Pro.

Awesome man. We're making a film about fixed gear bikes in Bristol in the UK. Not looking anywhere near as nice as your efforts here, but here's the trailer we cut a few weeks ago - vimeo.com/6298408
  • Tom Guilmette plus 3 months ago
man the video got awesome at one minute forty six seconds. nice pov mini cam shots!
  • Makinov plus 3 months ago
Cheers Tom, a lot was shot specifically for the trailer, we're in a very hilly city, so should make for some hairy footage! The POV shots were on a JVC Everio mounted on a clamp with 2 points of articulation, great for road filming, but would be terrible trying to get anything like the footage in this piece of yours.

Good stuff. The color match on the two cam interview is better but the blacks still aren't quite on.

Who's the old guy carrying the tripod?? :)

    Keep up the good work!
  • Tom Guilmette plus 3 months ago
yea, i unfortunately know and work with this guy...

Fantastic as usual, But…. And this is only my personal opinion… I would have taken off the sunglasses in the interview…. Would have made Alex more interesting to watch…. Eye contact is always important especially in this kind of interview where he is explaining something he really enjoys doing. His eyes would give him some facial expression that in my opinion was missing…. Once again this is just my personal opinion.
  • Tom Guilmette plus 3 months ago
yes yes yes! you are right, and i asked alex what he wanted and it ended up being a style thing! i should have put my foot down! LOL

when people wear glasses, they force the eyes to look at the persons mouth when they talk! plus you can see me in the reflection!

taking off the sunglasses == more generic

    it's lifestyle marketing, baby :)

As usual, wonderful looking piece Tom.

Is the shot at 00:47 from the helmet mount? How did you get it so steady?
  • Tom Guilmette plus 3 months ago
that is just a metal "L" bracket bolted to the helmet! you can read all about it in this blog entry:
    tomguilmette.com/wp/my-blog/archives/2197
  • Derek Lau 2 months ago
Did you drill holes into the helmet to attach the L bracket? or was it threaded already?

I am going to try something similar for my dirtbike with an HV30 and a .22 fisheye lens

any suggestions or help with the screwing the L bracket to the helmet would be appreciated

Wow, that was really great. I really enjoyed seeing your take at extreme sports videography, which I mostly do. The quality of the shots was amazing.

    Keep up the good work!

Homemade 5dmkII helmet mount - that was so stable, or at least what you edited was so stable, I really liked the helmet edge on the left too. Gave a nice perspective of the rider.
  • Tom Guilmette plus 3 months ago
most of it was stable actually! it worked really well. plus the fact it was a 16mm fisheye lens helped out.
  • Jon Bryant plus 3 months ago
    So patent pending then :o)

Looks great! Why do some shots have diffused highlights? like at 3:01, was that something in post?
  • Tom Guilmette plus 3 months ago
i shot all the ex1 stuff thru a polarizing filter in the red rock micro matte box. really gets that soft diffused look.

Si tratta di un GIANT GLORY DH 2009. E 'una moto molto veloce quando Alex sta cavalcando it!

At last a DH/MTB video that's shot right. Congratulations! Which shots are from EX1 and which ones are from 5dmII ? You commented in your blog that you will try to follow the rider even though you're not a professional DH, could you finally do it jeje? Just one last question, why do you use nikon lenses with your 5dmarkII ? What kind of adapter do you use? Do you think it is well worth to put Nikon glass in front of a Canon DSLR?
Thanks and keep up the good work!
  • Tom Guilmette plus 3 months ago
all the moving (panning and tilting) shots are from the sony ex1 with the letus ultimate. the lock down shots (with a slow digital zoom) were the canon 5dmk2. the shot of alex pushing his bike back up the hill was shot witht he panasonic lumix 720p zs3 point and shoot camera.

i was able to keep up thru some of the terrain, but he pulled away quickly and i yelled "Cut!".

i use nikon because that is all i own (but now i just spent $6,000 on new canon "L" glass soon to test out...)

i use a cheap nikon to canon eos adapter ring i bought off ebay for $14. no brand, made in china.

i am certain that the new expensive canon "L" lenses will make a big difference. the nikons i own are very old and beat up.

    thanks for watching.

Great film Tom, I love the little details like subtle zooms and the pans into him coming around corners. All the little things made it very exciting and fun to watch. Solid piece of work.
  • Tom Guilmette plus 3 months ago
thanks rob. i love using the scaling feature in the fcp motion tab to add slight pushes and pulls to static shots. much more engaging and it really does not effect the image quality that much if you just do it slightly.

One of the best films i've seen in a long time! Awesome job Tom. One question, when you had to move to different shooting locations did you have to hike your whole rig and everything around or did you break it down into a backpack every time and bike to the next location on the mountain?

Hi tom, how did you steady the shots you made while you were riding behind him? (lock&load??)
  •
  • Scott Morrison 3 months ago
thats was a sick video tom, really impressed, colors were awesome, being a biker im glad you were able to capture the technicality and speed of the sport. i did find however that the follow cam shots ruined a bit of the flow, cool none the less. i was also wondering if it was hard to pull focus while filming biking? im thinking of buying a dof adapter.

Another wonderful piece Tom. I love the different perspectives, including the use of the 5DM2 as a helmet cam.

I think the leaf shot on the ground and the rider as sort of an afterthought in the shot...that was the ticket for me. Love it.
