Alla Ricerca dell'appartenenza : Un Viaggio Cinematografico
Live Audio-Visual Peformance by Julie Meitz
IO Project, Macchiagodena, Italy
ioproject.eu
UPDATE 10/2009: I wrote a paper about this project (full performance, not just excerpts):
julie.meitz.free.fr/io_project/2007/2009/My_1st_AV_Perf_explained_Julie_Meitz.pdf
A cinematic exploration about family, immigration and a sense of belonging; a voyage into Neo-Realism & Post-Realism.
The performance is based on parts of a picture book called, “The Arrival” by Shaun Tan shauntan.net/books.html. It is an audio-visual intertwining of related subjects from various feature films, documentaries, image loops and music/dialogue (Italian, French and American). It also includes some photos and video of people from Macchiagodena & the Molise region.
Side Notes:
This is my first attempt at a live AV performance. The application I used is called Resolume Avenue 3.1.0.
As I state in the opening of this video, my performance suffered by not having enough time to prepare such an ambitious idea (38 minutes perf.!) and for not knowing the application well enough. But it was indeed a learning experience and I will continue to explore AV :-)

A bientôt miss Julie Meitz
Daniel
i VJ with resolume 2.4 also, and thus my first time with avenue 3.
yes, the music was part of the live performance, not added afterwards - the subtitles were added afterwards since it was in italian and part of my theme was to understand what was being said or sung about.
however, i had prepared a lot of the video clips with their own music which i chose after doing some research on italian films, music and neo-realism, etc. (but i also used french & american work too).
so for example, i used sergio leone's music over the picture book collage of the man departing, suitcase, and for example over "saving private ryan" and an italian-england electronica group called 9 lazy 9 (ninja tune).
however at times i would super-impose other music over existing music (& video too), for example over the "bitter rice" scene of the woman fighting in the fields, i used 2 video effects that i faded-in & out and at the same time faded-in-out a piece by a very early electronica group established in italy called musica electtronica viva (1969-70)...and mafia songs over "the village" & "bitter rice", and the "the village" over the picture book, etc. etc.
i wanted to do the music more free-style with video, but the in & out points were not retained in A3 (for both video & audio of different lengths), thus i had to prepare it ahead of time.
gosh...i have so much to say about this project, i could write a paper about it...
my theme was for a project that i have been involved in for 3 years now in a small village in italy, 2 hours outside of rome. it's a project i believe very deeply in called the "IO Project" - investigation about ontology.
since i had been the previous 2 yrs, i had videotaped/photographed the residents there and tried to incorporate them into my work...this event started with the theme of frank monaco photos, and thus i incorporated his photos too. if you read the description under my video, you will see a link to this project.
also, i made my live performance hell by making my composition too complex, meaning at times i had to manually synchronize 2 video channels on 2 layers at the same by pushing 2 buttons...to make a long story short, i wanted to make sure that indeed i was doing things live, but this is where i need to learn to find a better method and practice more.
lastly, if one has not seen all the films, my message is probrably very confusing (the full perf.).
ps: i saw on your site that you are a media teacher and played around with various mediums, techniques, that's really cool...when time permits, i will look at your work. thanx you for asking...
"enough julie", says julie-ulie
I think you did wonderful! Whether it passes certain technical standards by your expectations or anyone else's, it has impressed me on the emotional and creative level for sure! I love recognizing footage as well as seeing the yet unknown and your juxtapositions are very interesting 9eg. the rich lady loooking around from the train and the drawing of the troubled worker woman) You are obviously more comfortable with the visual than the audio, but I think it will take very short time for you to be satisfied with both. I absolutely loved it and it really pulled me into the idea of being new in a place and the different circumstaces and different emotions that it can bring up. I think you did soooowell.
merci beaucoup for the comments. glad it left an emotional impression on you ; some people in italy (mainly women) told me the same, and that is very heart-warming to know...more important than the technical parts indeed :-)
you know that lady on the train is from a sergio leone's film called "once upon a time in the west" - i recommend watching it, it's a great and touching film to me...i love all of his films.
and yes, indeed i'm visual first before sound and with all new learning explorations, it takes time.
...you are so sweet with everything you said, it's touching...thanx
hey, another film i recommend is "bitter rice" by Giuseppe De Santis - i just discovered this film a little over a month before my performance and it's one of my favorites now...too detailed to explain...but indeed i love it.
bises, julie
ps: i like the text & fish images on your website
i love the book! i just discovered shaun's work this year. you know, i wanted to animate it more, but the software i was using live had an issue with panning, movement, etc. and thus it's just simple dissolves from one picture block to the next, like old educational picture book films! ;-)
