The larger zooplankton (tiny animals) swimming around in this jar are daphnia pulicaria, a small crustacean that dominates the water column in many inland lakes in the Spring. Daphnia are voracious grazers and eat so much phytoplankton that they remove the tiny green plants from the water column at such high levels that the water clears to tropical like clarity for a short period of time.
