The vice of envy is about lacking contentment with our lives. Envy rejects the good life God has given us and obsesses over what God gives someone else. It sneaks up on us, even in the very best things of our lives, and we begin to see each other as competitors all striving to win the same prize.
Part of God's invitation to us in the Beatitudes is to help us see beyond what we think we need so that we can look outward to see that we are all in the same boat. We all need grace and the beauty of God's kingdom is that there is enough to go around.
