This looks really interesting, i'd definitely like a copy of this when it comes out
  • I am waiting to wrap up production in order to seek distribution outlets. I'm waiting on a couple of "surprise" interviews that I don't want to jinx by mentioning. But I should be wrapped with the film by Summer 2010.

  • maxi souto 2 years ago
screw kanye! you dont need him in the film!! its off the hook anyways!!
  • Lol. Thank you Maxi. Much appreciated. I agree in a sense. The only reason I want Kanye to partake in the narrative is because he was one of the artists responsible for bringing electro to a mainstream audience.
  •
  • Jazper Abellera 2 years ago
Stephen, this is such a genius idea!

I was gripped to my computer screen seeing all the artists I love, talk about the emergence of the electro scene, something that, to me, seems like many artists have turned towards (Kanye, Black Eyed Peas, etc. etc.). This work is something more culturally relevant than anything else I've seen in the recent. If Hip-Hop is the greatest musical movement in the last 30 years, than Electro indeed is its predecessor. And, I especially like what MC Spankrock said about Electro blurring the lines of musical genre, which is very much true.

For what it's worth, I think it'd even be valuable to talk about events like HARD and how it, too, is blurring the lines between raves and the quintessential music festival. I know the people who throw BLOW UP SF too, and if you want to take a club scene approach, that could also add to this already amazing documentary you have going.

I'd love to help out in any way I can.

Good stuff man. I dont know if its considered more house, but the One Love cd is also bringing the house/electro scene more mainstream. Guetta does a lot with those guys (Cudi, Akon) like producing music videos and such. Good luck with the movie.

Whats the song at 2:55? Know the song, just cant think of it
  • Guetta is definitely doing his thing right now. I would consider his music more house/dance, but it definitely incorporates elements from the Electro genre.

Track ID: Boys Noize - Oh! (A-trak Remix)
  •
  • Though, I might disagree with a lot of the choice of artists, and certain historical arguments with this video, it really isn't a bad idea.

You could realistically do a whole other documentary on electronic music in the post-indie rock sphere, ie: YACHT, Telepathe, High Places, Lucky Dragons, Dat Politics, etc.
  •
  • this is amazing looking. forward to the finished product

I gotta be honest with you, after seeing you spam on kanye's blog about getting him involved, i thought "This guy is just trying to get a big name in his shitty little youtube video".

    Well... i stand corrected.

To say that Kanye wouldnt be the biggest "electro" name in this is an understatement, with all the artists already involved, Kanye would infact be doing himself a disservice.

I for one cant wait til this is finished and ready.
This trailer has just blown me away.
  • I'm starting to believe that you're right, Filipe.

Did dude from Chromeo really just say that electronic music came from hip-hop??? Really? Where do they get this shit from????
  •
  • Jonathan - dude from Chromeo was an ill Hip-Hop producer for a Hip-Hop group called Obscure Disorder, not to mention the tracks he produced for Non-Phixion. I would say that constitutes a strong background in Hip-Hop.

You also have to remember that the insert is taken out of context for the trailer.
  •
  • jonathan Lledo 2 years ago
Strong hip-hop background obviously doesn't constitute strong electronic music background.. Electronic music came from disco and led to things such as Chicago House and Detroit techno.. It did not come from 'Planet Rock'..

If you made the trailer and it is 'taken out of context', you should really consider editing that part because you are really making him look ignorant to people who actually know dance music history.. Funny part is, out of everyone in that video, he is the last one I'd think would say something like that as he, his brother, and QBert are the only ones who have actual talent in this video.. Making loud, obnoxious music that sounds like 3 chainsaws competing to see who is louder is NOT talent..
  • I appreciate your commentary. Hopefully the final trailer will put all doubts to rest.

I am LOVING what I hear from this trailer.
I have gotten into electronic music in general since I listened to BPM and Area on XM Radio. Now that I can't afford it anymore I've turned to blogs and podcasts to get my fix.

I especially love the part where LMFAO describes the track they're listening too and the hand movements he does along with it. The way they look is exactly how I listen to tracks I love!

I feel like a lot of people are going to be able to relate to this film on so many levels. I can't wait to see it and tell my friends so they won't think I'm weird anymore lol.

the thing about electro is that we don't want it to be just another trend. we want it to last. we want people like aoki, mstrkrft, erol alkan, boys noize, justice, and what not, we want all of them to last. we want them to spin the electro scene over and over again. we ain't want this going away. we want electro to be here, ten years, twenty years down the road. electro ain't the newest biggest thing. it's just here. and be damn goddamn glad for that. now keep the bassline trippin' and let's get this documentary out.

    peace.

this looks dope!! Have you considered interviewing N.A.S.A.? they are definitely hot in the hip hop/electro scene rite now. Im sure you've heard "gifted" feat kanye santigold and lykke li, "whacha doin?" feat MIA spankrock and santigold, there whole cd "The Spirit of Apollo" is oustanding. Also i just want to drop in 3oh!3 they have crazy electronic beats like in their songs "punk bitch" and "tapp" It would be amazing if you add them and kanye to your movie!

But keep up the good work the trailer looks dope!

Stephen, you may already be planning to, but I would love for you to mention (if possible, lets do this for the kids) the difference between classic electro (Kraftwerk, Mantronix, Cybotron, Arabian Prince, Egyptian Lover, Aux 88, Dynamix II, Maggotron, Newcleus etc etc) and nu-electro (mstrkrft, erol alkan, boys noize, justice, etc etc). I know there are many many kinds of electro but I think enough time has passed that the youth should be informed of the differences. Just so everyone can be a bit clearer on what they are talking about from this point on out... I think all of us have experienced what Q-bert touches on in the trailer. -Some of the terms I use to describe the 80s-90s stuff: "Classic Electro" "Electro Funk" "Electro Bass" or simply "Old School Electro". Some of the terms I use to describe the 00's stuff "Nu-Electro" "French Electro" "Sawtooth Electro" "Indie Electro" or simply "Car Alarm Electro" Yes, I understand you are not making a documentary about the 80s or 90s, but I just think they need to be mentioned at some point for clarity and reference. Another great way to do it is maybe touch on some of the cities that gave birth to the term "electro" (Miami, Detroit, The Bronx, Los Angeles etc etc) and then touch on the cities that have carried the torch and created an entirely new beast (Paris, London, Berlin and pretty much worldwide at this point). Just my 2 cents... Thanks man and I look forward to your film. If anything, these wikipedia links are a great read for anyone interested:

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justice_%28French_band%29

  •
  • Hey Michna,
Thank you for sharing. To be perfectly honest my original intentions were to solely document the "Nu, French, Sawtooth, Indie, and my favorite "Car Alarm Electro" movements. I screened a Rough Cut to a couple of friends in the scene and one of them was enamored by the film but he made the same suggestion. His name is Demonbabies and he is now creating a "Genesis" sequence that will hopefully inform the current generation about the origins of EDM. I agree, the film needs it, even though it's not centered around the history of EDM, it needs to be included.

THIS SHIT IS NOT ELECTRO....remind me to unfriend the idiot that sent me this garbage link...

Chromeo is a fucktard idiot...electronic music predates hip hop by two decades....goes to show the smarts of the idiots making and listening to this crap...
  • I agree, Sam. It's a shame I can't take you seriously because using words like "fucktard" as a form of expression completely discredits your opinion. What a shame. If you watch the film you'll see why Dave-1 makes that statement.
