Images of the West Kimberley
This is a production I have put together for my brother Christian who required something to showcase the ability of the 5D Mk2 to audiences eager to hear about his life behind the lens.
We were lucky enough to be teamed up together for another adventure on True North. northstarcruises.com.au
Most of this footage and stills was taken on this trip with some familiar clips I had taken on my first trip. Once again we were treated to the splendor of the Kimberley and of course the magnificent True North and it's amazing crew. It's something you must do if you ever get the chance. It is a trip of a lifetime.
For those interested in the gear used we had
2 x 5D Mk2, Canon 16-35mm f/2.8, 24mm f/1.4, 50mm f/1.2, 85mm f/1.2, 400mm f/5.6, TS-E 17mm f/4, 100mm Macro f/2.8, Manfrotto T/Pod, Monopod, Millars DS10, Rode mic's, MacBook Pro, Lee Filter kits, Grads, polarizers etc.

Also If you want to follow the adventures of True North look up Mark at truenorthmark.wordpress.com he's Da Mann when it comes to that boat. Tell him I sent ya.

It's better than some stuff on Discovery HD!
Mike
It's approx. 24 degrees celsius now in Poland. I guess it's warmer in Australia this month.
Cheers mate!
Of next week to shoot Varanus and surrounds for Apache. Thats going to be pretty cool too.
Thanks for tuning in again Simon.
Yeah, yeah, I've heard all about your helicopter trip. It's not what you know, huh? ;-) Have fun (but I know you will)
Yeah we had our share of software problems as well, working on Borneo. Had to make the footage coexist with 25 frame 720p footage from a JVC proHD camera. Final Cut Pro was not happy, constantly skipping in playback of all the 5D MK II files. Eventually converted everything to 25 frames 720p using Mpeg streamclip and it worked beautifully.
Truly amazing :)
Mike
Cheers,
True North Mark!!
Your right about the subject matter but I think also it has a lot to do with the cameraman's sensitivity in relation to getting ones best side:)
Thanks for spreading the love on your blog also. See ya Thursday.
Mike
Terrific.
Cheers
Paul
Paradise on earth.
Masterpiece in every frame

But seriously, wow. I'm stunned, speechless.
Incredible work. You make it look so damn easy haha,
Cheers and keep it up!
Thanks for watching Riggey
Loved the Whale shots.
5DMK2 is in the mail and arriving Monday. Flying out to the Amazon next weekend. The excitement is reaching a breaking point.
You guys make it look easy... something to aspire to for sure!
Mike
If I could ask a few questions... The workflow is completely new to me, and I will not be editing until I return to Sao Paulo. I am wondering what I need to concern myself with while filming pertaining to my edit? I know that I need to use compressor to create different frame rates, I can't think of anything else I would need to do purposefully while shooting (besides selecting frame rates... which I can't) while keeping editing in mind. Also, I will be going with about 280 gigs in compact flash cards, if I run out of room, can I just dump the card onto my hard drive straight and just worry about workflow later? Basically, the less of post-production preparation I can do in the Amazon, the better. If I can simply film, move stuff to the hard drive and worry about all of the editing details later, I would be a happy guy. Any surprises I should be prepared for?
Thanks for your insight! Appreciate it!
I take a MacBook Pro with me and a 1 TB external hard drive. I dump all my footage onto the external drive using a CF card reader. All the files export from the camera as Quicktime Files and can be previewed by clicking on them. You can then delete anything which is no good. You can then back up that footage onto DVD from your drive if you are concerned about your hard drive shitting itself. Once your downloaded you can clear your your cards ready for the next day.
Make sure your 5D has the new firmware update loaded on it. It should be if it has only been purchased. Make sure you take a good tripod preferably with a fluid head. Hand holding is a real problem as the camera is so light it picks up every shake from your hand.
Shoot obviously at the best times of the day Sunrise and Sunset. Make sure you take a polarizer filter and some graduation filters for sunrise and sunset if you can. We use a Lee Filter kit which screws onto the front of the lens. A neutral density filter for day shooting may be handy when taking stills.
Watch your aperture settings. The 5D has the ability for an extremely shallow depth of field. It can be a problem with too large an aperture setting and getting acurate focus.(No auto focus in Video Mode)
The rest you'll work out as you go. have fun and don"t drop it in the drink.
For better or worse I have 2 CF3 32 gig cards. For right now, it's what I have to work with. Luckily, the tax on technology imports is so horrendous here (78%!!!) that I can sell these cards for a profit when the time comes.
Everything you wrote made sense and I had assumed most of it. Mostly by checking out videos here and other sites reading reviews and comments until my eye balls fell out. I just purchased the 5D, (literally found a 5 minute window of availability 3 weeks ago on B&H's site), so I am hoping that the firmware update comes with the model.
The only thing that I was not sure of was the comment about making sure my memory cards are the correct speed for video. I tried to do as much research as possible, I thought the CF3's were fast enough?! Does it not have to do with mb/s? Is it a setting or something I should know about?
Thanks again for the insight. Above and beyond man, really appreciate it. I'll definitely share whatever I manage to film there with you.
Thanks for the comment Lawrence.
Thanks for the rap.
Mike
Beautiful work.
What type of camera was used for the heli shots? 5d in a gyro??
Loved the shot of the diving whales.
The whales performed on Que. Shit if I had them in a big arse aquarium I'd have a million hits by now tee hee!!!!!
As you can see I'm still green at your super human video feats. I'll get over it. Thanks for the comment mate. Speak to you soon.
Mike
Believe or not...all those views have transpired into exactly 0 new jobs for me. :(
I'd much rather more work!
Peace & love
Mike
The video's look better and better! The camera is great.. but it's the videographer that captures fantastic shots like that! Well Done! I'm just beginning to scratch the surface of what the 5Dmk2 is capable of. I am looking forward to your next film!
Mike
It's a great camera and has no peers for the price at the moment.
Mike
Close though !!!
Thanks Al
