A young girl must face an inner demon to overcome the grief caused by the untimely death of her father.
A girl has fallen to a bleak outlook on life after the death of her father. As she broods over a cigarette, the very vice that killed her father, a curiously determined swallow swoops down to her. Entranced by it, she follows it through the woods. She is led to an eerie precipice where she faces a demon, a reflection of her inner turmoil, wherein the tiny bird has been trapped. The girl must find a solution to free the bird – and herself – from their tormentor.
I come from a nook in the woods of William Penn, a suburb of Philadelphia by the name of Downingtown, Pennsylvania. Having spent the entirety of my childhood there, I had grown attached to the little town, until losing my father to lung cancer when I was a junior in high school. My first short film, “The Suburban Bird” is a tribute to my dearly missed father as well as a sendoff into the journeys that await me. It revisits a child at a stage of grieving, leading her through a journey of the self to do away with the ugly turmoil raging at her core.
