Of the Victoria and Albert Museum Exhibition on Diaghilev, Marcia B. Siegel of the Hudson Review says:
"On a wall the size of a movie screen in the first gallery, a film loop of some remarkable early dance footage provided insight into the Russes repertoire. Tamara Karsavina trips through some snaky “Egyptian” passages from Fokine’s Torch Dance. Filmed in 1909, this solo anticipated a slave dance Karsavina did with Nijinsky in Fokine’s 'Nuits d’Egypte', which morphed into 'Cléopatre', the first of several “exotic” ballets that made the Russes’ reputation during the period when Diaghilev was stitching together a repertoire."
Never (never) imagined I'd see film of Tamara Karsavina performing an early Mikhail Fokine ballet!
