As we study the cinematic representation of the Holocaust we must turn our attention to humor. At first the reaction on the part of some is that humor has no place in the study of the Holocaust. I agree that it can be an offensive genre when dealing with this particular subject. Jokes about the Holocaust are often tasteless and disgusting and disrespectful to the people who were the victims and the survivors. It was no laughing matter to any of them! With that said it seems that examining cinema and its depiction of the Holocaust deserves some attention in a course such as this. The world was on the brink of war when this movie was made. In a stylish way Producer and Director Ernst Lubitsch lampoons Naziism and Germany. The story centers on a Warsaw theatrical troupe that outwits the Nazi occupiers by playing the roles off and for their lives.
