*Slight recut with a bit of color grading with Magic Bullet Looks

Just a quick fly one evening from Marshall Peak to test out my GH1 with Olympus 8mm f/3.5 fisheye lens. I am really pleased with this lens. The Field of view is amazingly large and its super sharp. There isn't even any chromatic aberration that I can see. Its also not all that expensive (for a nice camera lens) $669 at BHphoto. Although you will need a 4/3rds to micro 4/3rds adapter and the auto focus does not work.

This is also an excellent example of "convergence" as I could switch between HD video and stills.

Yeah that lens is nice. Interesting footage, how long can you stay in the air off one jump?
  • David Aldrich plus 2 months ago
On a typical day, as long as you want. Up to 6 hours is not unheard of. I usually fly 1-2 hours.

    That's awesome! I wanna go hang-gliding now.

I can't recommend it highly enough! Where are you located? I can tell you the closest best place to get a tandem flight.

    Germantown, Maryland =)

I live in SoCal and fly at Torrey and surrounding sites. I moved here from N.C. Ask for Bruce at KHK out there. I"m pretty sure there is a towing operation around Baltimore by the way.

Really wonderfull! Great lens to, I am looking for a wide angle lens too, I think this will be my choice too. Cheers, A.

This lens is really excellent but it is a bit on the big and heavy side. Also the auto focus doesn't work and you have to use an expensive 4/3rds to micro 4/3rds adapter. (I got a deal on eBay.) Panasonic have a 7 - 14 f/4 lens coming out that is a native micro 4/3 mount.

Great video. Are you using Woody Valley Tenax harness? If so do you like it?
  • David Aldrich plus 2 months ago
    Thanks Larry L!

Yes I'm wearing the new Tenax 3. It took about 5 or 6 flights to get everything adjusted and working but now I really love it. Tons of storage and it fits well. Very good XC harness.

    glad you got that lens.

Come out to California Tom, I will set you up with a top notch tandem instructor. You would love it!

I saw Steve Pearson out here at Lookout and I mentioned your great video of the wills wing display at the airport. All of your videos are great. I really enjoyed point of the mountain.

I am in the market for a new harness. I have been looking at the moyes matrix. The matrix has a long composite back plate that many of the folks here like. The tenax looks like a great harness.
  • David Aldrich plus 2 months ago
The Tenax is great, I am very impressed with the build quality. It is not the most streamlined, aerodynamic harness though. It has more frontal area than the other "race" harnesses, although that means more room for all your crap. Better sport, recreation XC harness than a full out comp harness I'd say.

    Sounds like a great harness.

We are flying Mingus in October and Florida in November.

How is the winter flying at Crestline?
  • David Aldrich plus 2 months ago
eh, Santa Ana winds shut us down. We get about 1/3 of days flyable November - February. Of those not too many are soarable.

I have no idea about hang gliding but that landing seemed so bad ass
  • David Aldrich plus 2 months ago
Thanks Ken. Yes, this would be considered a good landing ; )

  • David Aldrich plus 2 months ago
Indeed, the depth of field is very large.

    Thanks for watching!

That looks like one rockin' afternoon.
What did you use to mount the camera to the hang glider?
  • David Aldrich plus 2 months ago
    Hey Bill

I used a boom and custom machined mount that I built specifically for this purpose.
  • jehu Garcia plus 2 months ago
We want pictures of this custom milled mount Dave
  • David Aldrich plus 2 months ago
    Here designbydave.net/blog/2008/07/dbyds-summer-project-1-camera-boom.html

but I've made a few modifications / upgrades since then.

Wow! I looked at your link above as well as the test run video, humping the hang glider up the hill :-( I would have thought a mount that thin and long would do more bouncing around. But the video you get with it looks very stable. Two thumbs up.
  • David Aldrich plus 2 months ago
The video on this page was shot with my improved version. The camera was only about 1 ft out in front of me, thanks to the 8mm fisheye lens, it doesn't have to be nearly as long.
