Alan Brown in discussion
Programming the arts: is it for you or for your audience?
Alan Brown is a leading US arts consultant from the firm of WolfBrown and the keynote speaker for this year's Australian Performing Arts Centres Association Conference.
Alan's recent research into why people attend arts events could lead artistic directors to radically rethink their approach to programming.
Alan will be joined by Kate Champion, Artistic Director of the Sydney contemporary dance company Force Majeure, and Bruce Gladwin, Artistic Director of Back to Back Theatre, Melbourne.
ABC TV's Fenella Kernebone will facilitate the evening's discussion.
The panel will discuss:
What do people "want" from an arts experience?
Should artistic directors program seasons to give audiences what they "want"?
How would arts organisations balance this with their own artistic motivations?
Will programming for "benefits" lead to "bad," unsatisfying, or inauthentic art?
