Artquest, working with the University of the Arts London (UAL) Widening Participation programme and Common Practice, ran a set of high-quality, structured internships for recent UAL graduates paid at above the London Living Wage.
Common Practice, London is a group of small-scale contemporary visual arts organisations (including Afterall, Chisenhale Gallery, Electra, Gasworks, LUX, Matt’s Gallery, Mute Publishing, The Showroom and Studio Voltaire). Interns were placed in paid roles at some of these innovative and respected visual arts organisations, and in return these small-scale companies received extra staffing to work on specific forthcoming projects.
These films explore the experiences of the interns through the programme, considering the benefits of internships to participants and organisations and also the wider importance of paid and high value internships to the sector.
Unpaid internships block learning opportunities for all but the most advantaged sector of society, who can afford to work for free. The AWP Internships programme aims to level the playing field, placing UAL's Widening Participation programme graduates in paid roles to ensure diversity and equality of access to jobs in the visual arts.
