This 360 degree immersive projection installation presents 40 interviews with Shanghai artists conducted by curator Davide Quadrio, along with filmmaker Lothar Spree, and video artist Zhu Xiaowen. The special interactive panorama version is produced by Bernd Lintermann for Panorama Lab at ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, Germany. All artists answered the same questions regarding the role of the artist, their relationship with the external world, the social consequences of their work and the international market’s effect on traditional modes of artistic production. This presentation offers a dynamic anthropological insight into the urban panorama of modern Shanghai.
“40+4” views the situation of Shanghai’s artistic development, raises questions on the position of artists in a larger environment, and also reveals how artists perceive themselves in this fast changing context and art economy. The project puts together a series of questions that are personal, public, irreverent, and naïve, to understand what is going on in the minds of artists who are the pillar stones of the contemporary art scene in Shanghai, especially in the wake of an arguably alienating globalization and commercialization.
