Project purpose: Kia Island Reef Rangers programme developed and instigated in two other communities on the Great Sea Reef.

The Reef Rangers project has been an undeniable success, and a number of other communities in the area have already approached the team and asked if it may be possible to develop additional Reef Rangers initiatives.

We have already developed a strong team of Conservation Ambassadors (key community members who have been appointed to raise awareness of environmental issues) on Kia Island, and they have enthusiastically taken over much of the management of the Reef Rangers from the Project Team. We feel confident that this is now the time to take this project to the next level and expand the Reef Rangers to other fishing communities on the Great Sea Reef.

Objectives:
1) Consolidate the Conservation Ambassadors skills gained during the CLP project, particularly those relevant to management of the Reef Rangers programme so that they are able to run the programme completely independently of the project team
2) Develop a Reef Rangers toolbox for other communities including ideas for activities, basic information on marine ecosystems and teaching materials
3) Provide initial Reef Ranger Coordinator training to schoolteachers at two other sites so that they are able to take the first steps to establish Reef Rangers programmes within their communities
