Did you know that the dust you are allergic to is actually caused by dust mites? These microscopic arachnids called, "Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus", feed on human skin flakes! Humans shed about 600,000 particles of skin every hour - about 1.5 pounds a year! Some people, like me, are allergic to an enzyme in mite bellies that helps them to digest the skin. This enzyme ends up in their fecal matter. It may be disgusting but if it wasn't for these tiny sanitation workers, imagine the piles of dead skin we would have to deal with.

I've always had a fascination with the microscopic unseen world around us. What if you were small enough to ride one of these creatures? If three dust mites can fit into the dot above the letter "i" as seen in typical newsprint, imagine how different the world would look at that size! This was my inspiration for "Mite Rider" -Jason Hite 5/24/13
