Beautiful Brad ! Nice ideas in this too, like timelapse of the tide rising up.
  • Brad Kremer 2 years ago
Thanks Dominic... the tide rose 22 feet that night. I was blown away when I picked the camera up in the morning.

  • Really really great stuff, really like the streaky traffic footage and the bike stuff of Jeremy
  • Brad Kremer 2 years ago
Thanks... the bike shots were some scary moments for the camera. But I love the way they came out.

All of this is just mindblowing. I am in love with the scene looking up at the trees w/ the night sky and then it's overtaken by what I am assuming to be the auroras?
  • Brad Kremer 2 years ago
The forest shot was actually in Lake Tahoe. And what looks like the auroras are actually clouds. I was shocked in the morning when I saw it.
  • Alex plus 2 years ago
I agree! that shot is positively mind blowing. can you quickly explain to an amateur how you achieved that effect? were you rotating the camera a degree or two every so often? Phenomenal!
  • Brad Kremer 2 years ago
Sure Alex... I rotated the camera approximately a tenth of a degree for each shot. And each shot was around 30 seconds long at 33 second intervals. All together the shot took around 7-8 hours if i remember right.
  • this was amazing! so you did this by hand??? I guess the 'zoom in' on some shots were done in post? Thanks for the information!

Beautiful video! How did you do the panning shots, and what's the music?
  • Brad Kremer 2 years ago
Thanks... I used a mumford moco for the panning shots. And the music is just a stock track from soundtrack. I usually dont use these but this one seemed to work perfectly.

Can you list some of the settings used on the Cannon? Frame rate, shutter, total length (in hours) of each sequence etc... And what filter/effect did you use to alter the look in a few shots?
    Fantastic stuff
  • Brad Kremer 2 years ago
    Thank you,

Thats a deep question. Haha... Each shot varies depending on the time of day, the movement, etc... But as an example, the first shot, Emerald Bay at Lake Tahoe, was 30 sec exposures every 32 seconds and if I remember right it took about 6 hours. And I use lightroom for post.
  • FrostSTeeL 1 year ago
If shots take 30 secs, stars should have been like a line i think. At least every time i try this, they make a line instead of a white dot like yours.
  • Brad Kremer 1 year ago
I just doubled checked the shot and they were 20 second exposures.

I'm no astronomer, but I wonder if the angle of the camera to the stars makes any difference.

Wonderful shots. The compositions are incredible Can you share your video editing/compression settings? The video is strikingly clear.
  • Brad Kremer 2 years ago
    Thanks EastmanDC...

These clips area all 1080p 30fps. I export full res out of FCP. Then I compress to H.264 with at least 5000 bit rate. Sometimes I go a little higher on the bit rate as well. Hope that helps.

Some films capture beauti so well that you can feel emotions. Me being someone that lives in the flatlands, but needs to be in nature up in the mountains...it really makes my eyes water a little bit. Good job.

Wish I could be more like you Brad. Good for you there's only one! BKF.... sounds promissing but are you still a part of MDP?
  • Brad Kremer 2 years ago
Hey thanks JK. I appreciate the kind words.

I left MDP last year and started working for Burton. I dont know what my next plan is yet though. Time will tell...

hey brad nice work really enjoyed it, i was wondering if you have tried the 5d mark2 for snowboarding and i heard some things with rolling shutter. and the 7d is coming out soon and i was seeing if these dslr are good for filming snowboarding.

    thanks
  • Brad Kremer 2 years ago
    Hey Jacob,

Yes I have shot the 5D Mark II with snowboarding quite a lot. It is not perfect for snowboarding thats for sure. It is not a replacement for a good "video"camera for action. But, if used correctly, in the right circumstances it does produce some amazing shots of action. Check my video The Basic Teaser. There are several 5D Mark II shots in it. And a lot in the movie. I wouldnt want it to be my only camera, but it's a GREAT addition to the bag.

    Hope that helps

I think (although I am not completely sure) that you accomplished the toy-like affect by doing a few things.

First, you used a long lens to compress the scene (unless I am getting that backwards.) Then you either used a shallow depth of field, or simulated on with post-pro. Finally is the vignetting.

    I think?

Excellent job. I rather enjoyed this. I definitely learned something from this too.

    Shane
  • Brad Kremer 2 years ago
Not quite like that Shane. The selected focus is accomplished with a tilt shift lens.

    Glad you enjoyed!

amazing, and very inspiring ... well done!
i have question if you don't mind.
I understand that the camera movement is done by this rotary device attached on the tripod but how have you done this kinda zooming effect ? also what kind of lenses did you used ?
    thanks !
  • Brad Kremer 2 years ago
Thank you... The zooms are done in post using FCP.

I used a variety of Canon lenses.
    15mm 2.8 fish
    16-35mm 2.8
    50mm 1.4
    90mm TS 2.8
    70-200mm 2.8
