These shots were put together to test whether "Night Scene Mode" should be used on your consumer camera. Based on the results, I say neigh. However, my camera (HDC-SD1) has good size chips and does a real nice job on low light scenes automagically. Watch for the *ON/*OFF indications in the video for a visual cue.

I had to add the little bit at the end because the plane fly by was perfectly timed with the ad reveal on the billboard - I just thought that was cool. Stay classy, San Diego.

im really struggling with how to light a moving car at night, as the person providing the FX1 has decided not to provide it, and all my tests with the HV20 have produced results that have frankly worried me! i'll definately check out the night mode though - i had just been using the manual settings (to avoid auto gain/grain) i'll post the decidely less visually appealling video if i make it out!

Night mode seems to almost create some kind of slo-mo effect... it should work fine if the car isn't moving. Any motion seems to lag and smear.

hrm, night mode on the HV20 is a nogo, it just opens the shutter for ages, which i guess is all it can do, the car is indeed moving... :s

Must be a very noisy place :) Night mode is more if you go for an artistic scene, I guess. I think night mode would look good for close-ups / tighter shots - but you would have to 'kill' the background noise and add some music instead.
  • Eric E. Anderson 2 years ago
Yes, quite noisy in this particular area. But it's cool at the same time - with all the stuff going on...

i think the night mode works if you want that dream like appearance. It's just slowing the shutter speed and pumping up the gain right.
  • Eric E. Anderson 2 years ago
Yeah, it definitely does pump up the gain - It looks amazing while filming, but, movement is where it tends to falter.

I really like some of the streaking effects when it is on.
I guess it depends what you are after.
  • Eric E. Anderson 2 years ago
Yeah, it kinda grows on you... it could be good if used the right way.

While on night mode, can you manually increase the shutter-speed, then increase exposure to compensate for loss of light? It may help, I may be wrong.
  • Eric E. Anderson 2 years ago
My camera (Panasonic HDC-SD1) does have manual settings - but they are separate from the "mode settings" - so it's one or the other. The HV20 may be different.

Ah, I see. No it's the same issue with the HV20, and all consumer-grade cameras for that matter. It sucks really, and pro-sumer cams are a little beyond my student budget at the moment.

I liked the trolley in night mode, looks almost like a scene from Risky Business, just add a dash of Tangerine Dream.

Hey, you're right! Cool. Love that...

    I trust my Auto settings
I have enough to worry about just framing and panning
    Like your stuff Eric...

I know what you mean... Auto is awesome. Thanks ZuDfunck!
