I had the chance to visit with Matthew Everingham, who is managing the Regolith Excavation Challenge and the Regolith Simulant Testbed at NASA Ames. This video shows you the huge bed of lunar regolith simulant (fake moon dust) that robots, er, rovers with be navigating and excavating in for the 2009 Regolith Excavation Challenge-- more info at regolith.csewi.org/

Everingham works with the California Space Education and Workforce Institute, which administer the Regolith Excavation Challenge, one seven NASA Centennial Challenges.
