This is a timelapse shot over several months totalling about 10 hours cutting and then spraying a stencil.

It still needs some tweaks to editing and motion, but it takes an extremely long time to render, and there are loads of other projects in the way, so I'd prefer to share it incomplete and warty rather than never showing it because it's not "perfect".

Tech:
Shot with a Pentax *ist DS Digital SLR. The frames were taken as quickly as the camera could record to SD card - about 1 frame every 1.7 seconds.

The camera was immobile on a tripod, the pan and scan (or "Ken Burns Effect" if you want to be all photo nerd) was added later in After Effects. I shot medium-resolution images, which gave me 1500x1000ish pixels, allowing quite a bit of resizing and moving around the frame.

The faster, motion-blurred action as the video progresses is also post-production, created by speeding up the clips and blending multiple frames together.

Cast:

Rachgirl: Slow and Meticulous Stencil Cutting, Motivation.
Irwin the Python: Distraction, Comic Relief.
(For reptile-heads: he's a Centralian Carpet Python - Morelia Bredli - more photos of him can be found here: flickr.com/photos/jaymis/tags/irwin/)

Music: Spook - Glorious.

Strangely captivating time lapse, and slightly surreal with the appearance of the python! Thanks for describing some of your techniques - I'd thought about using the "Ken Burns effect" on my own time lapses but not owning After Effects I've never tried it before.

Very nice work. That was some exact(o) cutting!

If you get into doing more timelapse with your DSLR, I did a quick how-to for it here on Vimeo.

So cool. Wonderful project, both the timelapse and the final stencil.

I added you too my art channle to show all my stencil head students.

You can create, planes of focus by allowing the stencil not to be fully in contact with the painted surface, beautiful work more more

I liked that this shows how tedious art can be at times.

very nice. the end result is always neat to see, but the work involved on such a stencil is equally interesting.

This looks like a lot of work, but that you guys had fun doing it. The music was a perfect match IMHO.

The end result definitely looks like it was worth the effort. Where did you get the stencil that you used? Did you create it yourself?

    Thanks for sharing!

We created the stencil from a photograph. Increased the contrast and cut it into A4 sized chunks in Photoshop. Printed on to normal paper, stuck together and then covered the back with clear contact.

It's very flimsy, but was only designed to be used once so that's ok.

Awesome! Thanks for the update. I'd love to do something creative like this for a wall in our guest room. This was very inspiring. Thanks again for sharing, Jaymis!!

btw, ..this is a bit irrelevant. what kind of snake is that?
  •
  • Jaymis plus 9 months ago
The snake is a Centralian Carpet Python, also known as a "Bredli". Scientific name Morelia Bredli. Native to Central Australia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morelia_bredli

    His name is Irwin.
