I have been waiting to test out Sony's new F55 Cine Alta style digital film camera.
This cine style camera has very similar specs as the Arri Alexa... but costs 1/3rd the price. Kinda laid out like an Alexa as well.
In short, the F55 is one of the best cameras I have ever shot with.
It has it's limitations as all cameras do. But the look (in the blacks especially) is as good as 35mm film when shot in 4K
What is really trans-formative is recording in 4k. You can zoom in like 75% without any loss of picture quality.
That changes everything. You can shot wide knowing you can get any close up from the wide you just shot...
You can color it any way you want too.
The whites on the BMX bike kid shirt where blown mostly because i thought it looked cool, but the detail in his shirt is there. ( I shot on a crappy day weather wise...)
It is like unreal.
Yup... it's like an Alexa....1/3 the price, smaller and a bit lighter, but still it is a bear of a camera weight wise...
The codec is XAVC in a .MXF wrapper... It needs a plug-in for FCP X. Better yet, get FCP X v1.0.8, and the codec is native.... which is awesome.
4K is no joke workflow wise. We shot about an hour at 4K and it was almost a terabit of data...
I used SLOG2.
Music: Cubesato: Le Petite Prince.
Thanks to the kind folks at LVR for the awesome gear. (LVRUSA.com)
