Embracing the Monster; Engaging the limits of sexuality, representation and embodied subjectivity.
Embracing the Monster asserts a dynamic relationship between queer subjectivity, the representation of queer identities presented through ideological systems, as performed by the queer body. This project questions the boundaries between the visible/invisible, personal/political, private/public, body/technology, human/animal, interior/exterior, and normal/other.
The mythic figure of the monster, a figure that embodies difference and otherness, serves as prosthesis for the queer body. The monster is a symbol throughout history that we fear, yet desire. We are captivated by the monsters’ difference made flesh, and by its freedom from the order and discipline of bodies. Embracing the Monster takes pleasure in embodied otherness where identity is assembled through a dynamic, continually reproducing system.
