It’s no surprise that the Bristol-born Jamie N Commons spent his formative years in Chicago, for the origin of the electric blues and home to Chess Records is quite evident in his gruff, modern take on that sound. The now London-based Commons has been quoted as saying that he wants to “push the boundaries of what blues can be”, but what does that exactly mean? “I meant that I was trying to make it accessible to as many people who wouldn’t normally listen to that type of music. It seems to be getting a good reception, and not always from dedicated blues fans. To be honest, I don’t think we’ve actually played to crowds of chin-stroking blues men.” Recently penning a new deal with Grammy-winning producer Alex Da Kid’s KIDinaKORNER label, Jamie’s most recent convert is Eminem, who sampled him for his next single. His quest to make the blues accessible, it seems, is certainly gathering pace.
