Using minimalist drawings and and meticulously constructed soundtrack, Iceland Spar is a geometric evolution of unknown origin and unknown consequences.
This is based on 10 drawings used to create full rotation of a set of cubes on three axes. From this set of 10 drawings, I traced other possible movements of cubes.
The original idea of animating rotations of isometric cubes came from observing the optical doubling effects of some calcite crystals I have in my studio. "Iceland spar" is the name for large and clear calcite crystals from Iceland. It is thought that Vikings may have used calcite to polarize light in order to find the location of the winter sun, and navigate across the arctic seas.
