It's beautiful, and I was engaged up until the very end, but I felt betrayed at the climax. There was great potential to round off all the emotions built up through the film, but the end had the feeling of a crude attempt at cleverness in the absence of an honest conclusion. I think it would've been more courageous to follow through with what you built up in the first 95%. (I hope you don't mind an honest critique, I'm only offering my thoughts because I enjoyed it :)

Fucking rad. I think it's hilarious, and the laughter provided definitely makes up for not rounding off emotions. ESPECIALLY since you made it a "colt" advertisement.

    Thanks for the comments. :)

    Please, any critique is welcome!

That's the only way to get better. :)

VERY will done! You have excellent talent! :o)
I really liked your camera angles, edit pace and lighting. I was surprised by the ending. (a colt ad)
    What did you edit with?
  •
  • Radoslav Karapetkov 5 months ago
    10x

All Adobe. Offline edit at home and then in a studio - CS3 for finishing.

We shot 720p on the Panny HVX200. Great camera, even with all the new "beasts".

I envy you your camera! Great. I edit with Vegas and Premiere Pro CS3 Vegas on my PC and Premiere on my iMac 24. I love them both. I am shooting HD with Canon and Sony. I would really like that Panny. :o)

We rented the equipment and the CS3 finishing was provided by a studio that supports students.

I'd really want to have a HVX200. Maybe when it gets older\cheaper, I'll get one, second hand.

IF you ever get the chance, try out Vegas 8.0b. I am certain you will like it!

Demonstrates lots of talent in directing, shooting, framing, lighting, color grading etc. Also building the emotion is done wonderfully, up to the 'climax'.

Personally I think filming a subject like this, brought so clever like this, is flushed through the drain by the colt (read "cold") reveal. (did you have it to make a colt ad to get money from the America Foundation??).

I would give it 9 points out of 10 for the first 95%, dropping to a 5 for the full short. This ending is almost is a demonstration of immaturity. Basically you are emotionally cheating your audience. Don't waste your talent on this!

What about cutting of the reveal and and leave the audience with the question 'what could be the father...' One way or the other, change it for the better!

    Thank you for the comment.

No, the short isn't related in any way to the Colt company.

The foundation simply supported it as a student project.

Yeah, for a lot of people this jokely ending doesn't fit well with the "body" that precedes it. I'll take this into consideration.

This was my first "serious" project: pro equipment and a bigger crew.

I doubt that I could change the overall structure of this short but I assure you that this is my last project of this "kind".

It was something like a drill for me personally, and now I'm moving on to more serious stories.

Nevertheless, I have a handful of small and harmless "jokes" that I'd gladly shoot for fun. :)

Thanks again for your comment, I respect your point of view.

    Regards.

    Radoslav,

I think its a good decision of you to move on to the more serious projects. And by the way, there is no reason to refuse doing 'funny' stuff.

For me this short was so well done and created the emotions surrounding suicide so well, it just couldn't end as a joke...

Keep up the good work, I look forward to your next project!

    nice!

i really like the atmosphere. but i have to agree with some of the comments here saying that the climax was kind of.... offputting.

i really felt like i was pulled out of the story cause of the end. but everything else was well put together.

excellent video ! i think the mood was developed very well - i empathized with the loneliness and despair of the main character and i think you could have maximized that effect by leaving out all the people at the train platform and possibly shown the woman as a ghost like image. - the main character seemed too interested in the woman at the train station - if he was at the point of ending it all, would he even look ?
i hope i don't sound harsh because i really enjoyed this video and the ending appealed to my sense of humour.
For me, the light ending balanced out the heaviness of the rest. great work !
  • Radoslav Karapetkov 2 months ago
Yes, leaving the station completely empty would also work and actually would have been the easier thing to do :).

But I wanted to have some extras, in relation with the girl, cause if it was just the two of them, she would have noticed the suicidal guy much earlier.

And I think that an empty station would have been too surreal, I personally prefer a more lifelike approach.

Thanks for your time and attention.

I just went to youtube to search for your short.

Not one single comment, you have better luck there posting a vid of a monkey or your dog farting.

    YT sucks haha.
  • Radoslav Karapetkov 2 months ago
YT is probably too overcrowded. And the quality just sucks.

I have noticed that here, the audience is generally closer to filmmaking, which is good.

Obviously, the YT audience doesn't care much about struggling filmmakers.

Nice new title, nice new thumbnail.

    It's better now!
  • Radoslav Karapetkov 1 month ago
Yeah, cause a lot of folks that I send it to, expect something else - this title is defining the short in terms of genre, lol.

And it's a more inviting thumbnail, which doesn't tell too much about what's inside the short.

that train station was so clean- lol (they are pretty dirty here in NY) this is exceptional for a student film. Great job -
  • Radoslav Karapetkov 11 days ago
Extras don't come cheap, you know. :)))

    Yeah, It's pretty clean - it's actually a new station :P.

This is Genius stuff, Radoslav. You have extreme fluency in the language of motion pictures. I also like the the spare background music.

Rad, I was just reading all the other comments after I made the previous comment. Now if I wanted to say some thing critical about the show . . . The ONLY thing I can come up with is this: The swirling camera dropping over the side of the building, transitioning into a falling bullet did not have you're usual level of finesse. Maybe the camera falling off the building could speed to a rushing blur, and that blur could disolve to another blur--the blur made as the camera tracks the falling bullet to its' collision with the concrete floor.

I basically think this is great stuff and it WILL lead you to success.
  • Wow. Thank you, mister.

I'll think about what you said about the roof shot. My initial plan about that shot was different, but we had some tech. problems on set, so that's what we could get.

    Thanks for watching.
