Against The Odds
One in 150 children in the U.S. has autism. Daniel Tuttle, Jr., 14, of Austin, TX, never received appropriate behavior modification services and is still unable to communicate or use the toilet, which is unusual for a teenager with the disorder. His foster mother, Sandra Stephenson, is determined to help him develop those skills, but his advanced age complicates the possibility of his progression. If Daniel does not acquire skills of autonomy and communication, he will need intensive support for his entire life.
