Inspired by Tom @ Timescapes I went out to my favourite filming location in the UK, Dungeness on the south coast to see what I could get.

Please read my blog for just how hard it was and how bloody scary too!

Oh no... I've created a monster. Bloom breathing down my neck now on the timelapse scene. :)

Cool opening shot, Phil. Great frame on that creepy old boat.

now...how do I make that slow moving dolly...mmmm....don't worry Tom. I like my sleep too much, you are safe!!
  • Tom Lowe pro 2 years ago
    Wheew! *wipes forehead*

Like you said on Twitter Phil, what you really need is a warm woman or a cold beer at your side for timelapse.... or both. :)
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
Think beer would work best! Warm woman sounds like a great idea, would then have to find a way to kill the other 118 minutes for that ten second shot...
  • Tom Lowe pro 2 years ago
Hahahaha. That's why the beer comes first, Phil!
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
    ah! smart man!!
  • iamkalaniprince plus 2 years ago
I could have definitely used a warm woman on my 4th timelapse at 9000ft the other night.. It was pretty comical actually... just picture me, 6'5" battling the cold while trying to embrace myself in the fetal position in the back of an Expedition... while outside all i hear is...click.................................................click.................................................click.. and I'm like "it's all good, only 1292 more shots and I'm there !" the other half of the time it was me with the heater blasting nice and toasty, but feeling like I have a teaspoon of sand in my eyes while my contacts scream for help.. Let's just say it was an emotional 2 hours but I was very happy with the final outcome.. Thanks to YOU GUYS !

VERY fitting music...Immediately made me think of space and stars. I guess that makes sense since it's Holst's "Neptune". Very haunting. Always love the music choices you make!

beautiful little experiment there philip, but just curious...

why did you choose to shoot a time lapse with the 7D instead of your 2x 5D's which have lower image noise, especially in pitch black condidtions? you could have been shooting 2 different shots/angles simultaneously and been home sooner :)

or even 3 shots if you set up the 7D as well.
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
only one intervelometer for starters...and I haven't seen any 7d timelapse yet so wanted to get some out there.
  •
  • Very good job for a first time experiment! It would have been cool to see one with the 5D as well.

Did you film the opening waves at night too?

Freaking amazing how many stars show up! Too bad the GH1 can't do time lapses : (
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
    can it definitely not?
  • David Aldrich plus 2 years ago
Well actually, looks like you can with a remote timer thing. Might have to give it a try!
  • Box-head* plus 2 years ago
You can get a simple little Intervelometer which would do the job. google pclix

Can I achieve this with my EX-1 Philip?
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
not is as low light as that. you can get amazing stuff with slow shutter 1/64 but even at that it won't be as good as a stills camera. It is still best video time lapse camera I have used though.

    Niiiiiiiiiiiiice.

Love it how it looks almost like dust in the third shot, save from the stars obviously not appearing in the foreground, but still.

Really like the wide image as well,

    Cheers.

P.s. I sort of just want to dub raging hardcore techno/Russian electronic dance over the top of the "strobing" lighthouse shot just for fun haha.

    Cool!! Good Job!!
    I just got the 7D!!

I want ask you something, use 7d to shoot almost 10~15 min, the body starting warm. It's ok??

How long do you keep shooting with the the camera??

The process of time lapse remind me of the time I did 3D and it was painfully slow.

I want to see more :)

    Great footage. Love the colours.

Found a dead pixel on the right side in the middle though. Red dot visible on the last and second before last shot.

Do you thing it is because the long shutter speed and/or high ISO setting or is it there even with normal exposure.

    Keep up the good work.

    Peter!
  • Sebastian TR 2 years ago
Awesome footage Phil , love the boat shot great composition.

well picked up Peter on the dead / hot pixel ? I wonder if it was produced due to the lighthouse white pushing the sensor or what ?

Firstly, I just bought a 7D, and thank you for all the information you have provided on yours, and other sites. Without knowing it, you have been a great help to me.

The stars look amazing! Just wondering, were the stars and foreground shot separately and added together in post? If not, how did you manage to shoot it, keeping the DOF in that little light?

    Cheers,

    Jim

you should try using a motorized telescope for moving shots. You can program slow pans and tilts, I've been working on rigging a camera to an old one I have.

Seems to be the same Sky as in the Skywalker Ranch Video, am I right?

So...could you tell me how you do that?!

Philip, is the opening shot of this video timelapse too? If yes, how did you do to get the motion blur? It looks like you've overcranked the camera to 120fps or something.

  • Luis Sanchez 1 year ago
it's such an remarkable piece.. how long did you leave the shutter open for and how far apart are the still being shot? i'm super curious, your 36hr time lapse was auto iso, auto shutter, and auto iris... this one here has mind blowing detail.. I hope I'm not asking for to much.. thx a bunch
