Thanks Diego, i was just testing out this camera. I can't wait to really film some good stuff of my mates on bikes ;)

what lenses used? 28-135mm? and the name song is?
    thanks
  • Craig Tull plus 2 months ago
It's "Cosmic Love" by Florence and the Machine Diego. I used a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L lens.
  •
  • geckonthewall 2 months ago
60p slow motion is so sweet !!!

    what lenses did you use?
do you have something to help focusing? viewfinder or monitor?
  • Craig Tull plus 2 months ago
Yes i love the look of 60p slow motion ;)

I used a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L lens. I manual focus using the 7D's LCD. It's not that bad once you get used to it mate.
  • infoPimps.Rakesh plus 2 months ago
I agree pulling focus is way easier than people think. I've used the cheepo 50mm 1.8 (horrible focus ring) on a 5DmkII and T1i and it's way easy, the Canon LCDs are fan-freakin-tastic!

nice. 24p is so much better! maybe I have to trade my 5d....? grrr... I dunno...
  • Craig Tull plus 2 months ago
I'm not so sure Byron. 60p i can slow down with it looking natural and 24p i can't :(

Why is 24p so favourable mate?
  • Byron Quandary plus 2 months ago
Nah I mean 24p vs 30p (stuck with 30p on my 5D). Yeah 60p is fantastic also. But for normal speed, 24 is so good. That first shot is 24p right? I just love the "strobiness". You can really notice it with him moving his head around quickly. So much more cinematic than 30p.
  • Craig Tull plus 2 months ago
It was all filmed at 60p mate so if I needed to I could slow it down. I think the strobiness feel is the sun, I'm not too sure.

Does 24p look different to 30p then? Don't sell the 5D just yet. The lowlight capabilities must be amazing! I'm going to try out lowlight tomorrow night so we'll see how the 7D handles that ;)

    Take care Byron
  • Byron Quandary plus 2 months ago
Well I was pretty shocked to hear you say that first shot was 60p, but I guess it makes sense. Presumably, vimeo, and any movie player (e.g. quicktime) can't/don't play back footage above 30 fps. Somehow these players remove frames? I dunno, I'm pretty new to this tech stuff, so I'm just making wild guesses.

But anyways, I downloaded your source file and put it into Final Cut, and walla, that first shot was playing back like you would expect 60p to play back in real time i.e. super sharp motion with no strobiness at all, basically "video look" galore.

I'm not sure what editing soft your using but if you want to see what I mean, just play it back within your editing software to see the difference.

But if 60p looks that good in real-time when you play it back on any player, then hell, yeah you might as well always shoot with it, and you'll have the freedom to have proper slow mo...

But at the end of the day, while everything I've said could possibly be complete nonsense, and not true. What I DO know is that that first shot looks super swell awesome on vimeo and quicktime player =) however it's achieved.

And I forgot to say, the editing was great in that clip! And such a good song choice. Keep it up.
  • Justin Heaney plus 2 months ago
Yeah mate. Low light seems to be the biggie.
Would be great to see some shallow DOF in low light... i suspect this 7D will be more than adequate.
    Cheers
    Justin
  • Craig Tull plus 2 months ago
Yes i think thats it Byron. Vimeo plays back at 25fps i think if i'm correct :s I'm not too sure though haha.

Maybe thats what it was making it look different.

I'm using FCP and yes it does look different in there. Much more video look and smoother. I kinda dig this look though!

Thanks a lot for your kind words Byron i really appreciate them ;)
  • Craig Tull plus 2 months ago
Yes Justin i'll get some lowlight stuff tonight and post it up for all to see ;)

    I hope it's adequate hehe ;)
  • I think vimeo plays whatever you upload...

Haha, I grew up in Taplow, down the road. The Town Hall building was used as the ext shots for the Carry On films, you can check this out in Carry-On Doctor. Oh, and nice shots too, the slo-mo looking nice.
  • Craig Tull plus 2 months ago
Yes I have heard some of the Carry On films were filmed here in my home town. It's pretty exciting to think that ;)

Thanks a lot for your comment ;)

Beautiful Craig just Beautiful! Love the detail and the smooth on the slow motion... the 60p is just amazing. I have a 5D Mark ii and the low light capabilities are just awesome. I would love seriously to see your test in Low light, Please let us enjoy that soon. I was thinking in selling my 5D and get a 7D but i think i will gonna buy a 7D and keep my loved 5D ( the 2 complement each other)even if i have to Struggle money wise! ;(
  • Craig Tull plus 2 months ago
If only the 5D could have variable framerates I don't think the poor 7D would stand a chance :p

If I was you I would keep shooting with the 5D until the next batch of Canon camera's. They will most likely have higher framerates and be full frame.

    I can't wait for that day ;)

Nice video....I was wondering about that lens....really nice dof....was it hard to focus with the camera sceen? have you tried it hand held?
  • Craig Tull plus 2 months ago
It's really not that bad to just focus with the LCD screen in my honest opinion.

I did try the lens out handheld but quickly went back to putting it on a tripod haha, it's pretty hard to keep her steady!

  • Vicente Gil Ginestar 2 months ago
Hi Craig! I really like your videos. This week I wanted to buy the lumix GH1, but I'm beginning to think that maybe I should go for the 7d. Do you think of this? Do you like the GH1 still? Thanks. Regards,
  • Craig Tull plus 2 months ago
The only thing I can think of that's better with the GH1 is that it has a movable LCD screen. It's annoying to keep having to get down to the level of the 7D.

If you can cope with that though you'll find the 7D the better camera ;)
  • Vicente Gil Ginestar 2 months ago
    Many thanks for your answer!!!

  • Thibaut Grevet plus 2 months ago
    Amazing ! Amazing !
Just a question , I see on the 7d website that he allows to shoot at 30fps, and you manage to shot a slow motion at 60fps .. How it's possible ?

Do you think that the 7D is better than a Camera at the same price ?
  • Craig Tull plus 2 months ago
    Thanks a lot Thibaut!

    The 7D shoots at 24,25 or 30fps in 1080p and 50 or 60fps in 720p mate.

I think the 7D is the best camera in it's price range for myself. It really depends what you want to do with it. I wanted a camera that could do amazing video and could take decent photos when i needed to. It's certainly held up to what i need it for!

    Thanks you very much !

Your are right ! I think the 7D it's the best way to make amazing shot and beautiful picture.

    Wu Tang for Ever !!!
  • Craig Tull plus 2 months ago
Are you going to invest in one Thibaut? I would highly recommend the Canon 7D but also the Panasonic GH1!

    Wu Tang Forever ;)
  •
  • Thibaut Grevet plus 2 months ago
    Yes I want !

But i am in two mind between camera and reflex.
I see Dave King movies shot with a Panasonic AG-HVX201AE but the price is too expensive . One of my friend shot with D90, and the rush are good . But when i see your vids, it make me feel so crazy to see this quality, and the price are more reasonnable...

In addition i don't know a lot of things about photography and video so your help is welcome !!

( sorry i'am french my english is poor )
  • geckonthewall 2 months ago
    je te poste un MP
  • Craig Tull plus 2 months ago
Yea Dave King makes the beat edits with his Panasonic, but even speaking to him, he is very interested in the VDSLR's now cos of the DOF and other things.

    I would still defo recommend a 7D or GH1 mate ;)

If you need any help with photos or videos in the future I'll try my best to help out bro, don't hesitate to contact me ;)

  • geckonthewall 2 months ago
do you have a gamma shift before editing?

with the 5d the gamma 1.8 became a 2.2 when I convert in prores. it's very unpleasant :/
  • Craig Tull plus 2 months ago
I don't know what u mean mate. All I did was converted the H.264 files to prores 422 LT using Compressor mate.

Awesome shots! It's great to see stuff of this quality as the 7d hits the shelves. In my case it's a matter of waiting on Amazon.. I think I would almost be better off buying locally!

that 60p is... so... SMOOTH! o.o

Did you simply dropped it on timeline or you had to do some processing to make it look that smooth.

Beautiful video !! thanks for sharing
  • Craig Tull plus 2 months ago
I just slowed it down in FCP to 45% and unticked frame blending. That should make it smooth ;)
  • ZhiC 2 months ago
    Thanks!

In Vegas, I guess it's called 'Resampling' ?
  •
  • Would be cool if you could shoot the same stuff in 60p, but with as close to 1/48 shutter as possible (1/60?). That would get rid of the strobing/stutter effect you get when playing it back in 24p.
  • Craig Tull plus 2 months ago
The fast motion of the bikes would look blurred if i was to use too slow a shutter speed :(
  •
  • Neal Carroll 2 months ago
Hmmm I think I see a bit of rolling shutter when the dude jumps his bike. That is one of my biggest concerns about getting this camera. That and sound.
  • Craig Tull plus 2 months ago
Which clip? I've just looked through it again and can't notice this but you may be right Neal!
  • Neal Carroll 2 months ago
0:31 is the shot. I may be mistaken but I swear I can see it.

  • alvaro gonzalez 2 months ago
60p on your 7d for this video, very well done, at what resolution does the 60p work for optimal image quality on the 7d?
  • Craig Tull plus 2 months ago
I think you mean like 1080p or 720p.

    The 7D shoots at 24, 25 or 30fps at 1080p and 50 or 60 at 720p.

I hope this answers your question!
  • alvaro gonzalez 2 months ago
u sir are the man. thanks again!

  • Jon Chou 2 months ago
    sooo goooood.
    i really want a 7d,
what would you consider an "all-around" lens for the price and the kind of quality you get?
  • Craig Tull plus 2 months ago
Look at the 50mm f/1.8 for a starter lens I think. It's about £75 and it will produce awesome results ;)
  •
  • diligo frog 2 months ago
If I am not getting my 7D...then I guess the sun won't shine no more... Yet another superb video, how did you do all those slow motion of bikes doing those jumps. It is quite cinematic...
  • Craig Tull plus 2 months ago
    Thanks Diligo ;)

It was all filmed at 60fps and then slowed down in FCP. remember to turn off frame blending and you should see similar results ;)
  • diligo frog 2 months ago
Thanks for the tip. It will be some time I am not into video you see..hence I guess it will be alittle while before I can do such edits :D

    Amazing Mate!
i'm actually looking to buy a 7d somewhere, but since they are new, i cant find any cheap deals.
Dad's going to singapore though for a few days in a week or so, i asked him if he could pick one up over there for a cheaper price. Hopefully he can and ill be able to create beautiful DOF shots and slowmotion like yours.
Also as far as photography goes, it would be an amazing camera for that too. it would kick my 450d's ass haha!
Excelent Job on this video mate!

I hope you can get yourself one from Singapore mate. UK prices are far too much at the moment :(

    Amazing Vids!

I'm a photographer who found your work while checking out info on the new 7D, but I'd love to see some of your bmx videos entered up on trickcomp.com, there's not much there yet, so check it out while it's still new.

I'll take a look at that trickcomp site soon and possibly throw up some BMX videos. Thanks for the recommendation ;)

24p @1/48 shutter speed, lest see the jurkyness in the shoot
  • Craig Tull plus 2 months ago
I really can't remember but it was quite sunny so maybe 1/500th or maybe higher!

I will shoot some 24p stuff at low shutter speeds soon for you ;)

You really have to look for it. I am quite sure you could have either change the frm rate or maybe it due to editing the vid...

This is the only thing with me and the sound in and out!
  • Craig Tull plus 2 months ago
Ah ok mate i still haven't noticed it. You must have better eyes than me!

I'm going to be recording sound with a Zoom H4n so that shouldn't be a problem in the future ;)

Am I the only one annoyed that 60p is only available at 720p? If I'm working on a project at 1080p and wanted to add smooth slow-motion I'd have to downsample my entire project...

I don't understand how the 5D MK II shoots 30/1080 with one Digic IV Processor but the 7D, which has DUAL Digic IV Processors, can't handle 60/1080.

    :'(
  • Craig Tull plus 2 months ago
    I've got a 720p tv so i'm not bothered at all :p

Hehe just messing with ya man ;)
