The idea was to create something that focuses equally on both the soundtrack and the image. The film follows ink exploring a variety of surfaces, accentuating movement, the textures, shapes and colours it encounters and becomes by representing these properties sonically. As it interacts with various items and surfaces the sound track develops and sonic qualities of all previously encountered objects linger.
The title 'Sounds are Objects' references the way we describe and understand sound; through visual and physical metaphors: sound can be 'rough' and 'smooth', and it can 'move' 'up' and 'down', for example.
Sounds are Objects is a composite of key interests: music, illustration, sound design and film making. Alternating animation and sound design during creation of the film allowed sound and image to fully reciprocate, and stopped either from being approached with precedence.
