HG10 Test
I wanted to see how the camera performed with a fast moving object, but with different settings... for some reason, sports mode did not perform as i thought it would, Program with auto white was EHHH, Cine Mode was alright but Sunset Mode i think came out the best.
I tried using TV mode with 250 through 2000 but the videos came out very very ghostly, and jittery, i was not satisfies with the TV performance as well.
i will continue to test until i find that good soft spot!

If some one could figure out how to get the footage down right, that would be great. It could be codec's and software stuff, or camcorder settings?
I would advise everyone to join you in your search for taking good moving shots with hg10, because that is why I went with the hv20 , because the videos I saw here using the hv20 just looked better, but I wanted to get the hg10 but didn't because of motion problems. Hopefully others that have hg10 can figure it out where the problem is since hg10 uses different compression.
Question: do you get the moving problem when viewing on HDTV using HDMI cable from camcorder? Or is it just in post after conversion?
It could be the hv20 has been around a lot longer and has 10x the videos here than the hg10 and the hv20 has a website just for it, so , more advice and user input .
I'm just not sure, if it's the codec, format of HD, or the settings, if the hg10 doesn't move at all , it looks ok but if any type of movement it causes me motion sickness and I looked over a few days to make sure I wasn't having a bad day. On the hv20 if the camcorder is shakie , it doesn't look good, but it doesn't cause the motion sickness for me. Good luck. You can't go wrong with the hv20 for 600 dollars. Unless you hg10 users can pull together and start a site to figure out the best settings and codecs for the web.
p.s. I should add that I'm watching these videos on 42 inch HDTV full screen , so maybe if tiny view it wouldn't cause the Hg10 motion sickness. It could be vimeo.com developing codecs or settings that work for big screen... but at this point hg10 videos cause me problems , there are exceptions , if no movement AT ALL of camcorder, or very, very, very steady shot if panning. So that is a factor that could cause my motion sickness with hg10, a possibility, if your hg10 shots look good on hdtv using hdmi cable , seems like it would be fixable, but if it causes motion sickness that way on big screen , that is not good.
There’s no difference shooting high speed moving Objects. if you will shoot sports just set your camera to 60i with a high shutter speed. What happens is that most people don´t know how to handle the MTS files, so when deinterlacing they just blend the frames causing ghosting (that must be what causes you sickness). If you deinterlace your video in the right way each frame will be generated by each field, so there will be no ghosting and the video will look perfect... it´s always an option to work with tapes and more tapes or spend some time to learn how to handle your camera's files...
I’ll try to do some fast moving objects next weekend.
And yeah, I also have me PC connected to a 42" Plasma and watch all videos on it. The original quality here on vimeo is awesome but still 33% of the original quality (cause it's 4000 Kbps).
Maybe do a search of hv20 and hg10 and you can see what most of us are talking about.
If you are right 99 percent of the videos here could learn from your experience.
Point us towards hg10 videos that are done the right way with some hand held shots to see that it doesn't cause the weird effect, because that motion sickness effect was the only thing stopping me from going with the hg10. In pro review it did say motion was not as good on hg10 as compared to hv20, and it didn't mean anything to me, until I looked at videos here and saw , yeah, but if you are saying it's a deinterlace problem post videos to put the myth to rest.
If it is something that can be fixed david you might want to hold off, unless you just want to get out before your window of return is closed.
The problem seems like any movement is jerky,as opposed to smooth, that is the closest I can put into words, even when I looked at Tiago videos , although beautifully done, still gave me the feeling of jerkiness, micro jerks, but it weirds me out! The HV20 doesn't look good when shakie motion but doesn't seem to have the micro jerks to it.
Yeah, like every camera you have to know how to manage it.
I'll definitely test the high motion this week. Give a look at this video vimeo.com/679504
It was shot with Hv20, and in my opinion... I see a lot of ghosting, motion artifacts, micro jerks...
We cannot forget that this both cameras are consumer camcorders, compact cameras and the hardware on both are exactly the same. If we were talking about the Sony PMW-EX1.... yeah, it rocks!!! Simply amazing!
Take a look at the video and give me your feedback :)
I’ll post fast action footage next week :)
Cheers
here is a Test Video:

for some reason this video looks better than the HG10 video!
I did look at that clip and yes it does have shake in it, but it seems like hand holding shake, but , it doesn't give me the motion sickness, I don't know what to call it, micro shake, mini freezes, making up phrases to put into words.
So, yes, there is shaking in that video, but, you don't sense what I'm talking about? It could be my TV or me , or other factor, but there is something that effects me to give me that motion sickness feeling when watching hg10 footage on vimeo if it pans a little too fast. It's something my equilibrium is picking up and I don't know why?
Although both the hv20 and hg10 have same lens/etc ... the codec is different 25meg vrs 15 meg. And it could just be software related, which can be fixed. But there is a difference in Format but I would think it could be fixed, or just needs to get right settings for vimeo.
both cameras uses the same stabilize so the shakeness would be the same... the mini freezes is just because Vimeo plays smooth with only NTSC files (29.97fps or 24fps) so the mini freezes will show with PAL videos (25p) on Vimeo. if you download the file and play it there will be No freezing... it´s a Vimeo problem. I think the problem with the pans it's only the ghosting effect Not the shakeness. I will do some tests handhold pans and tripod pans that you can download the original and see if cause you that feeling...
Stay cool bro!
You could be right, because I downloaded his video and it looked better and didn't cause the motion sickness.
So I guess it is vimeo that is causing the problem, good to know. This video is from USA and not PAL so vimeo maybe having problems with both pal and ntsc with hg10 at this point. So it is fixable, you have had access to both hg10 and hv20 and you would pick hg10 , why, because hard drive and ease of gaining access to files?
It's a Vimeo re-encode problem... Normally it´s with Pal videos but might happen with some of NTSC... depends of the re-encode that vimeo does...here is a nice example vimeo.com/679184 If you play it on Vimeo you'll see a lot of micro freezes but if you download it it's really smooth.
Check out these HG10 videos also, there's some fast motion and they play very smooth cause it´s not re-encoded.

About the camera... I was working with tapes for 4 years and got tired of it, when you first buy the camera it's awesome, it's new and you'll spend a lot of time around it. But when you begin to have tapes and more tapes. you want to search one scene that you shot a year ago and don´t know in which tape you had that 10 seconds awesome shot... searching by forward and rewind... you reach a point that editing becomes secondary cause you just don´t want to waste 3 hours searching the tapes. With HG10 it's just so easy... just shoot, transfer and organize your folders, this in my point of view gives motivation for editing. The difference in the image quality (almost the same quality) does not worth the convenience for shooting 3 hours of video and transferring that 3 hours to the computer in 5 minutes, ready to edit!
Check those videos and give me your feedback about the motion... you can also download them.
Cheers!

this was shot with the HD1000 and i had extreme low light. Compared to the HG10 i thin ki got better quality out of the hd1000.
I see nothing wrong with that camera!
The operator has some learning to do :)
You could use a $100,000 camera and still have the same results.... as how you tape.
Get a tripod and settle down.
The idea of filming and taping is that the SUBJECTS are the one moves and the camera just be there to record on wide angle.... with your dog as this case.
Rather than swinging the camera all around, nail it one place and then go to another. Then edit out anything in between, so it fades or overlap to the other view.
There are sooo many good examples here on this site that people do it as above.
Their movies are superb.
BTW I wrote feature film scripts in the past and saw how they do it.... or just watch a lot of tv as well :)
