The Dr Who Vivid projection on Customs House was commissioned by BBC Worldwide with the support of Destination NSW.
It’s the ultimate Dr Who fan engagement!
We begin with an image of the eternity clock calling fans to Customs House and preparing them for an onslaught of Dr Who action.
In the projection show The Doctor travels through time and space where he encounters various creatures including the Cybermen, Silurians, the Vampires of Venice and the Weeping Angels before escaping in his trusty TARDIS.
Spinifex’s lead designer and co-creator, Jamie Tufrey, really wanted to leverage the fantastic characters of Dr Who, and capture the epic cinematic grander of Dr Who Series 7.
The designs are built around a detailed 3D models of Customs House, so we can project matching details on to every nook and cranny of the building. In the scene with the Vampires of Venice audiences will feel like they are in St Marks Square, as Customs House transforms into a Venetian Palace. This is just one of several incredible world’s that Jamie has created in this very entertaining 6 minute piece.
To bring the projection to life Spinifex use the latest cutting edge techniques including complex particle simulations, hyper realistic 3d Matte paintings as well as old school, hand drawn animations. What better way to celebrate 50 year of Dr Who then with this terrific piece of entertainment and just another great reason to come end enjoy Vivid for yourself.
Hardware and mapping was undertaken by our good friends, large-scale projection experts, TDC (tdc.com.au)
