Experimenting with C4D and After Effects. This film consists of a free download of the female killer shot over a green screen, courtesy of Hollywood Camera Works (hollywoodcamerawork.us). In After Effects, I used the camera tracker to obtain data that defines the camera and its location for every frame, as well as a null object that defines the location and orientation of the floor plane for every frame. I exported this data to Cinema 4D. This data automatically created a camera in C4D that moves exactly like the camera did in the live action scene. The Null object became the reference guide for building and orienting the virtual set in C4D. In C4D I built the warehouse and the barrels and crates. I used the C4D presets to find two human males. One became the dead guy on the floor, who never moves, but the other I had to edit quite a bit to lift his arms up and use the character object to build a rig for him. I animated his death by gun shot. I then lit the scene to match the apparent lighting from the live action scene of the killer. I rendered out a Quicktime movie. I imported this into the After Effects project with the female killer in it, and put it into a layer below her.
Back in After Effects, I had used keylight to get rid of the green screen around the actress, and I had to build an animating mask around her because she waves the gun around and crosses over objects that were in the set when they filmed her. I also color corrected her to better match the lighting in the C4D scene. I added muzzle flashes and gun fire sound effects, and blood splatter.
I will teach my students at Newhouse how to do this project in the Fall.
