The Sydney Monorail is closing... we rode the death-rattle. It is unique, and now its old, but still unique. Sydney I loved your monorail, its quiet nod to a future envisioned in the 50s.

In service since 1988, a valuable member of the public transport team, loved, loathed and laughed at for 25 years.

Minister for Transport Gladys Berejiklian announced Sydney’s monorail will cease operations June 2013. “The monorail has never been truly embraced by the community and is reaching the end of its economic life.”

Makes me sad, the vision, the excitement of the launch, the happy faces... Today the dirty, unkempt monorail with closed stations and filthy windows, gave me a sad half-smile. The future beckons and the monorail will not be part of it.
