We rose early - 3:45am - to board our boat, arrive at Monad Shoal, and enter the water before the arrival of any other divers. The Threshers are out before the sun breaches the horizon, and we wanted to be there when they approached the cleaning station. After verifying our Nitrox mixes and setting our computers, one by one, we slipped into the ocean just as the dawn was breaking.
Our efforts were rewarded: the Threshers came and swam around us. We were fortunate enough to enjoy their presence for about 25 minutes at depth. Then we gradually made our exit, allowing the next group of divers to be awed by their long, scythe-like tails and shimmering silver colored bodies. Until the next encounter ...
Many thanks to Eric Casas of Aqua Dive and to Joy Benedicto and our other friends from Cebu for making this amazing dive trip possible.
This video was shot using a Sony RX100 compact camera with a wide-angle dome port. I rendered it in this way in order to minimize the noise in the film due to a high ISO setting. Eliminating color saturation and experimenting with brightness and contrast allowed me to produce this video with what little light was available at 100 feet at 5am.
