Here's what I struggle with, though. The greatest leverage point for affecting climate change is industry. We need to hold our gear-makers accountable for the ways and places they source their raw materials. In fact, just *having* gear-makers may be incompatible with fixing the climate. The outdoor culture itself needs changing.
What if the focus of the annual OR show moved from all the new swag to new swag made from recycled materials? Or *truly* sustainable materials. What if the OR show shut down for a couple of years, just to put people's heads in the right place?
We can holler at our elected officials all we want, but I suspect turning a critical eye back on our own outdoor culture may have an even greater effect on our climate change goals.
Doing something is great. Doing the right things is even better.
