Here at RØDE we recently had the opportunity to collaborate with legendary engineer Martin Benge (The Beatles, Abbey Road Studios, Studio 301) as well as player piano enthusiasts Peter Philips and Tony Hilton. The team were transcribing a very rare piano roll to an electronic format - the “Chopin Nocturne 72” as originally performed by Vladimir de Pachmann - to then allow the playback across modern player pianos such as the Yamaha C7 shown in the video.
Martin wanted to be able to quickly and easily create a studio-quality recording of the reproduction on the piano, and was excited to try out our iXY stereo microphone for iOS that he had heard so much about. Using the iXY in conjunction with the RØDEGrip accessory Martin was able to get a detailed, faithful recording as you can hear in the video.
Our thanks to Martin, Tony and Peter for getting RØDE involved in this interesting project to preserve the piano roll performances for generations to come.
