Definitely one of the better 7D image quality I've seen yet. Love the sharp colors. Do you remember at what ISO most of these were shot at?
  • Mike Panganiban 2 years ago
Agree with Ly. Loving the colors in this piece. Curious on the iso as well? You throw on any filters Simon?
  • Simon Cudby 2 years ago
No filters. Just bumped the color saturation a click in the Picture settings.
  • Simon Cudby 2 years ago
    Mostly 100 and 400 iso.

    Thanks,

This is fantastic, I can't even see any rolling shutter issues, a lot of so called "cinephiles/experts" are complaining about with regard to fast moving action.

    Great stuff! :D

    Love the footage! Well done!

7D is a great cam, but seen a mixture of generally good footage. Is it all in the glass as they say??

  • creative-control 2 years ago
Top notch, and like everyone is asking: what was the ISO, lenses, shutter pls, cool, thanks
  •
  • Simon Cudby 2 years ago
iso 100 for the pit shots with wide aperture. iso 400 for the action at around 1000/f8.
Contrast and color pushed a little in camera. Edited on Final Cut Pro.

What did you use for the audio?

    Hi Tim-
I use the Sennheiser MKE400. It works pretty well IMO.

That's some of the best looking footage I've seen so far!

Did you see any of the heating issue we're hearing about?
  •
  • ZHIC 2 years ago
    awesome, great!
haven't been deceived by 7D so far... quite tempted. 2010 perhaps?
  •
  • Yufei 2 years ago
The focusing is great! Can you share a bit on how to achieve such good focus?

    Thanks a lot.
  • Simon Cudby 2 years ago
Manually focus on a spot and the riders would go through that zone. Some of the action was at a small enough aperture that there was plenty of depth-of-field to cover a pretty wide area.
  •
  • chris karalis 2 years ago
did you shoot in 60 fps?
and did you do extra processing for the slowmotion? or just slowed it down in FCP?
  • Simon Cudby 2 years ago
I shot a mix of 1080/24 and 720/60. I converted the frame rate of the 720/60 to 24 in FCP.

  • Bellographix 2 years ago
The colors and the shots were beautiful! Did you use any stabilizer device, viewfinder?
  • Simon Cudby 2 years ago
I used a tripod for the static pit shots, and handheld on the track. I have the Hoodman loupe, but I think I might fork over the cash for the Zacuto.

Wow! Fantastic shooting! I'm getting a 7D and was wondering what it's capabilities were at shooting action in motion like this and you've finally put any doubts I had about the camera to rest.....now all i need is that 50mm f1.4 -_-
  •
  • Joe Moya plus 2 years ago
During anytime during your shooting... did you ever experience any rolling shutter? If so, what were the camera movement and/or settings.
  •
  • Drew Maw 2 years ago
What's the process of converting the 60p footage to 24p in FCP?
  • Rick Darge plus 2 years ago
Open the 60p clip in cinema tools and convert to 24p and save. Import in to FCP, edit.
  • Drew Maw 2 years ago
Now, couldn't you just do that when you're converting in Mpeg Streamclip? It asks you to specify FPS, but you can also leave it blank.

Thanks for the info! Best 7D I've seen yet, just superb.
  •
  • Sweet.
  •
  • Fast shutter is superb at freezing all that flying mud v nice
  •
  • Eric Ferguson 2 years ago
The first 7D footage I've seen that doesn't pump out the shallow DOF just for the same of shallow DOF. Great stuff, 60p on fast shutter really works here. Colors are great, dynamic range seems not to be a problem.

Beautiful footage. I shoot primarily action sports, surfing, kitesurfiing so this gets me stoked.

Where you shooting continually with the 7D? Did you get any warnings with the overheat icon during you filming?

I am just trying to work out how hard one can push this camera.
  •
  • panga 2 years ago
exactly what i was hoping the 7d would be capable of - high motion sports footage, mine should be arriving end of the week
  •

I do alot of work with the HVX and am thinking this cam is next for me. I know the Canon is around $2,000 but how much $ were the lenses used in this video. I'm thinking that buying this camera doesn't get me results like this without another $5-$20,000 in lenss?
  • AJ Aguirre plus 2 years ago
i am wondering the same exact thing
  • Stewart Smith 2 years ago
the canon 50mm f1.4 he was using is under $400 USD
    the sigma 10-20mm EF-S f3.5-4.6 is under $500 USD
and the Canon 70-200 2.8L is the really expensive one at just under $2000 USD
  • Ludovic Jolivet plus 2 years ago
well the 70-200 2.8L cost $1,300 and the 70-200 2.8L IS cost $2,000... the IS is useless in video:)
  • Daniel McEnrue 2 years ago
wait...i thought it was crucial in video??

Really good shutter speed selection bro.. That's the one major thing most shooters don't get right.., Well that and exposure..lol.. anyway Very professional..
  • Mike Neale 2 years ago
High shutter is key for shooting action stills but in video it can make the action look far too digital. It may be worth using ND filters on the lenses to get correct exposure and keep the shutter speed lower. I very rarely use a shutter speed over 1/120 when shooting with a video camera. The 7d may be different i dont know. The footage looks amazing as it is but it may be worth trying the lower shutter and seeing if there is any difference. It may look a bit more film like.

    Hi Simon,

Great vid. I have been a fan of your mx vids for a long time. I make videos for the moto magazine website in the uk. Seen one of your vids on racerx the other day and i thought Cudby's got a 7d the lucky git. Been shooting some depth of field stuff with the letus extreme lens adapter but it is a real ball ache at times. The 7d stuff looks great. I want one really bad. Keep up the good work

wow the metering system is doing a great job. No filters huh? great vid buddy! Also you won't regret getting the Zacuto. I had the opportunity to try one (version 2) and it is amazing. To bad they are out of stock until November 7th I believe.

How do you rate the 7D compared to professional video cameras such as the HVX200? Obviously there's a restriction on recording time but that aside, is the picture quality up there with the best?

Regarding lens prices, you can actually get the 70-200 for about 1K, the IS version runs about $1800-$2000 brand new.

And by the way--Holy Crap, this is good. Interesting how quickly pro still shooters can adapt their talents to motion.

This is also the final straw for me. I'm lining up a project for the next few weeks on our local ski resort. No way am I shooting my 5D solo, not after seeing this.

The shot at 1:10, absutively RAD! Great job man.

I'm not seeing a lot of skew, even in the poles and fence posts. Are you doing anything to remove it in post? or are you using some technique that I'm not aware of?
