The amateur shots taken by the shepherd Lorenzo tell a true story. Everything is quiet on the high pastures of Valandro, in Adamello Brenta Nature Park in the Italian Alps, or so it seems. Time passes slowly and serenely for the shepherd, but suddenly the peace is broken: the bears are back. My companion the bear is the story of a hostile relationship (shepherds against predators) old as the hills, but it is also a statement of solidarity among foes. Both are subjects of political and scientific processes acted out far from the pastures where this conflict takes place. These are processes in which the film's protagonists have no voice. The film’s epilogue highlights the risk of losing a human presence in the mountains, which is key to the preservation of territorial knowledge and identity.
