A long section of Magazine Street in New Orleans has a smooth new surface ideal for cutting across the Uptown/Garden District area FAST! Two very narrow lanes of traffic and on street parking will compel almost any cyclist to keep the pedal to the metal to avoid being continually overtaken by motor vehicles.
Best time to ride this time trial in my experience is between 9AM and 11AM weekdays when traffic is generally light and work vehicles slow traffic down to less than 25 MPH. Weekend mornings from sunrise to 9AM will be greeted with very light traffic as well but everyone in a car will be driving FAST. There is a public bus on this route but you will likely only see one or none going your direction any given day.
Worst times - any weekend after mid morning if you want to break a time record. However, due to heavy traffic it becomes easier to keep up with motor vehicles but expect to rest at any red light. Lanes are too tight to safely filter to the front most of the route.
NOTE: Sun right in my face made it difficult for the camera to pick up the speedometer and dumbing-down the video quality for upload killed any hope of seeing the numbers. I spent a lot of time between 23 and 24 MPH with some short stretches above 25 MPH and below 23 but never fell below 22 unless cars made me slow down. I did not want to point my flashing headlight at the computer this time - I wanted maximum light flashing ahead of me for safety reasons due to the nature of Magazine Street.
